Love and Life

I've enjoyed this series and this book was another aspect of the life in Harmony, Texas. There have been fires, crime, death and a lot of happiness for the people in Harmony. This book was a blend of both. Recurring characters Ronny Logan, the Biggs brothers, Beau Yates, Tyler Wright and Martha Q all put in appearances along with new characters Cord McDowell and Nevada Britain.

Cord McDowell returned to Harmony after six years in prison for a crime that was really an accident. Without anyone to testify on his behalf he had to serve out his sentence. Now he just works his job as a mechanic at a local truck company and returns home to work equally hard on his land. Both his parents passed away when he was in prison and he has no friends, except for those who smile or speak to him. Ronny Logan is one of those and his boss Tannon Parker hired him even though he is an ex-con. The sheriff is the only officer of the law who hasn't threatened him. Working is his only outlet and he expects to do that alone for the rest of his life.

Nevada Britain is the wild child of Harmony, born with money and status, she has been married three times and has taken over the ranch and oil business left by her father after her brother refused to have anything to do with it. Using all her ready cash to buy her brother out, she needs help to bring in a good year for the ranch, so that she can concentrate on the oil business. Nevada is determined that she will not go back to her ex-Bryce Galloway, even though he keeps contacting her and leaving messages. Nevada is not that stupid.

She decides to offer Cord McDowell the land that their families have always had a dispute over, all he has to do is marry her for eight months after the first frost and the herd has been sold. Cord is skeptical but since he doesn't have any other offers he decides to accept the proposal with one stipulation - Nevada has to sleep in his bed every night. Nevada really needs the help on the ranch but she has other secrets that she keeps from Cord. Cord has a secret that he doesn't let Nevada know about also. They will need to work together to get through the next eight months or they will both fail.

The secondary story is between Ronny Logan and Marty Winston. Marty left Harmony two years ago without letting Ronny know he was leaving. She has finally received a letter from him to let her know he's not well and wants to see her before its too late. Ronny is her usual shy self but Marty it too important not to see.

This book has a lot of highs and lows. It isn't high drama but IMO shows people as they really are. Shy, scared, snobby, kind, nosy and a host of other characteristics. Cord and Nevada learn to trust, Ronny and Marty learn that life is not perfect and Martha Q, is just Martha Q. There's always a lot going on in Harmony and I like looking in and seeing what is happening.

Can't Stop Believing is like a good friend that you will always treasure filled with fun, laughter, and tears! A must read.

Years ago Cord McDowell was sent away to prison. Now that he is out, he is trying to make a new life for himself.

Nevada Britain's family has had a long time feud with the McDowell's. So you can imagine Cord's surprise when Nevada offers him part of her land. There is just one catch...Cord has to marry Nevada. Cord has a condition as well...Nevada has to sleep in his bed every night for as long as they are married.

Jodi Thomas has done it again. She made me fall in love with her and all the people of Harmony even more. I did not think it was possible. I loved the characters in this book although I would call them more family then I would characters from a book.

It was no surprise how Cord and Nevada's story would turn out. Neither Nevada or Cord liked each other but the more time they spent around one another they were bound to fall in love eventually. Nonetheless I still love a good love story with a happy ending. Plus, Cord and Nevada had lots of spunk between the two of them.

Another love story that I really enjoyed was Ronnie and Marty's story. It was sad but happy at the same time. I was cheering for them the whole time. I even started to tear up some at the end of their story.

Can't Stop Believing is like a good friend that you will always treasure filled with fun, laughter, and tears! A must read.

This book made me VERY VERY SAD

I love Jodi Thomas and have been reading her books for years and have a copy of each of them in my personal libaray.

I have been waiting for Ronnie and Marty's story since they first appeared and now that their story is here,
I am So Upset I cried and ranted when I read it, how could this happen if ANYONE in this series deserves a wonderful happy ending it is Ronnie. After this there is NO WAY that Jodi could ever give Ronnie a happy ending I will like or understand.

I don't know what future books for this series will bring but at the moment I am not entirely sure that I will be getting them for myself or if i will read anymore for this series, this was VERY upsetting. I didn't expect to fall in love with Ronnie and Marty and then to have my heart ripped out along with Ronnie. I am still grieving.

I know that these are just stories to some people, but to a true lover of books this was like losing a very Dear and wonderful friend and I am having a difficult time coming to terms with it.

Skeptics: Don't be so sure of yourselves...

First, I'd like to take skeptics head-on: you may scoff at the subject matter but you probably have no real knowledge of it. You - we - are part of a primitive civilization and know next to nothing of the nature of existence. For hundreds of thousands of years man looked at birds in flight and dreamed of flying. There are people alive TODAY who were born before man could even figure THAT out, the relatively simple dynamics of flight. So, don't be so dismissive of what you don't understand and assume you 'know' what's possible and impossible. As Plato advised, 'a wise man knows he knows nothing.'

The fact is, this avenue of research is not antithetical to scientific research. Indeed, it cohesively follows the lines of the latest research in quantum mechanics. The double-slit experiment, as important as it seemed years ago, now seems, in the wake of recent discoveries, monumental in its import: the human mind can, in fact, control the physical world, can, in fact, transcend the "laws" of physics. This is now an established scientific fact. The work of the author and his renowned mentor, the late Dr. Ian Stevenson, strongly suggests that the mind (or 'soul') not only transcends minor laws of physics (wave-particle duality) but a major, awe-inspiring one as well: our souls able to return to mortal life in a new physical being.

The author, Dr. Tucker, not only conducts his research with an eye towards quantum physics but strictly follows scientific method as well. While the case histories of the children themselves may seem subjective, with much of it anecdotal evidence from the parents, Tucker is actually highly objective in his findings, relying on otherwise-inexplicable corroborating evidence from other, unrelated sources (often family and friends of deceased persons). The cases presented in the book are compelling and include the most famous American case, that of James Leininger, made famous by the book 'Soul Survivor' and subsequent filmed documentaries.

This is a subject that now deserves to be taken seriously. It is, of course, easy to scoff at the notion that our being, or soul, survives death of our physical body and that we are able to return to life in another body, but if you really look into the work of Tucker and - even more so - Ian Stevenson, you will see that there is no other explanation. This book, especially, explains the scientific bases for this finding as well as offering many compelling and dramatic case histories to illustrate the dearth of any alternate explanation of why these children have intimate knowledge of the lives of deceased people. An important book, in my opinion.

Don't let my emphasis on the science mislead you: the vast majority of the book deals with the truly extraordinary cases of these children, not science. My review is, I suppose, more of a defense of the legitimacy of the subject matter, as such a book will certainly be attacked by pseudo-intellectuals hell-bent on 'disproving' it. However, it's actually a thrilling and engrossing read and one you will not soon forget.

I read this after seeing the article in the University of Virginia Magazine. I had not previoulsy read anything by this author or his mentor Ian Stevenson (spelling?) Still - I found the data-driven approach to remembering past lives very refreshing (one out of around 450 people report a past life memory).

Chapter 8 and 9 on the link of memories to quantum physics (ch. 8) and the analogy of past lives to dreams (ch. 9) were simply awesome - and brought together a lot of well researched themes from many other works. Still, the simplicity of the writing and the application to this work make the discussion, perhaps, easier to follow than an entire book on quantum physics.

Return to Life does not give many answers - nor can it or should it. Appropriately, the book informs the reader so he/she can take one step closer to their own interpretation of some very profound themes. And that, in my opinion, is one trait of an excellent book.

Finally!

I have come to the same conclusions about "reality" as Dr Tucker has, and am so relieved that he has skillfully put together the evidence from so many different disciplines to come to some awesome conclusions. I no longer feel so isolated. From quantum physics to many documented cases of reincarnation, we are drawn to what seems to me (and Dr Tucker) the idea that we must come to a post materialistic era. Coming full circle from superstition through Newtonian physics to a more profound appreciation of consciousness sans boundaries, Dr Tucker has written a philosophical book for the ages. The chapter Mind over Matter alone is worth buying the book. The anecdotal stories of children remembering past lives are very entertaining and persuasive. Well done Dr Tucker!

About the Author

Greg Lukosek

Greg Lukosek was born and raised in the Upper Silesia region of Poland. When he was about 8 years old, his amazing parents bought him and his brother a Commodore C64. That was when his love of programming started. He would spend hours writing simple basic code, and when he couldn't write it on the computer directly, he used a notepad. Greg completed his mechanical engineering diploma at ZSTiO Meritum― Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland. He has learned all his programming skills through determination and hard work at home. Greg met the love of his life, Kasia, in 2003, which changed his life forever. They both moved to London in search of adventure and decided to stay there. He started work as a 3D artist and drifted away from programming for some years. Deep inside, he still felt the urge to come back to game programming. During his career as a 3D artist, he discovered Unity and adopted it for an interactive visualizations project. At that very moment, he started programming again. His love for programming overcomes his love for 3D graphics. Greg ditched his 3D artist career and came back to writing code professionally. He is now doing what he really wanted to do since he was 8 years old―developing games. These days, Greg lives in a little town called Sandy in the UK with Kasia and their son, Adam.

Not a programmer? Start with this book.

I have been trying to learn Unity for about 8 months. This is where I should have started 8 months ago. If you have no experience with coding then this is the book for you. 99% of Unity tutorials and books assume you are coming from a coding background and quickly tell you what code to write and don't bother to explain it. This is the first book that I have found that actually teaches you C# as it teaches you Unity. I really cannot recommend this book enough if you are coming to Unity from really any background other than computer science. I would pair this book with "Foundations of Programming: Fundamentals" by Simon Allardice on lynda and also Unity's tutorial "Roll-a-ball" for a complete beginners course.

Overpriced Mess

This is an incredibly over-priced book at a cost of nearly fifty dollars, and it's also full of major omissions and other problems.

First, the book's layout is utterly ridiculous. Not only does every page have a one inch margin, inexplicably, often pages have an additional 1-2 inches of empty white-space, which means that 2 to 3 inches of page space are just wasted for pointless white-space. Furthermore, the headings are excessively large and also bounded with unnecessarily wide white-space. Finally, the main font size is oversized as if for seeing-impaired or remedial readers.

The idiotic layout issues continue. Most of the figures are useless screen-shots that over-explain interface matters that could be handled with simple text descriptions. Worse yet, many of the screenshots have massive amounts of empty space, wasting pages and pages of the book as much of the time, the screenshots fill an entire page.

To clarify, many screenshots show some specific interface detail, and many of those images, i.e. menu drop downs etc, are empty in the lower half. A sensible layout would have simply trimmed the screen-shots so as to make more efficient figures that can use page space better. This book, however, is not sensible, and I felt patronized and insulted by the constant barrage of useless screenshots taking up entire page after entire page.

If the book was priced significantly less, these things wouldn't bother me, but when the book is barely 200 pages, this sort of wastefulness infuriates me. I'm buying the book for informational purposes, not for a pretty layout that wastes page space and reduces value with huge amounts of empty filler. Compared to other C# and Unity 3D books that I've purchased, this book is a pure waste of money because of said problems. To be more specific, the book covers a very sparse amount of C# relative to many other C# tutorial books, worse, it provides only one actual game walk through that is rife with major omissions and errors.

The actual game tutorial is very basic, which isn't inherently a problem, but the fact that it omits certain critical bits of information makes the tutorial actually useless in terms of enabling the reader to make an actually functioning game.

The worst omission is the walk-through for collectibles. The author provides no guidance or instruction in terms of actually generating the collectibles within the game space constrained to the terrain/ground. This is a huge problem because the author presents an endless running game that uses an uneven game surface (gaps/holes and floating chunks of ground that the player can avoid or reach by jumping). Over the course of the game, players see how many coins they can collect as they run through the level.

I imagine that one needs fairly sophisticated code to generate the collectibles according to available and accessible surfaces. Afterall, it would make no sense to generate coins in a gap/hole as the player would fall and die (as in Super Mario Brothers), likewise, it would be stupid to generate coins in the air that aren’t accessible because there is no surface for players to reach through jumping. The author gives zero insight as to how you would bind the generation of the collectibles to the variable game surface/ground.

Given that this book has only one game example, this particular omission makes the book practically worthless as the author proposes that the fundamental game be a endless running and coin collecting game...but if the reader has no instruction in terms of generating and positioning the coins, then the entire walk-through is pointless as there is no guidance for placing the coins within the actual game.

Another huge omission is instruction in terms of generating the level chunks such that variable surfaces dove-tail in a way that makes sense functionally. The author does present code for randomly generating the level chunks that will cycle continuously in order to provide the infinite game ground/surface necessary for an endless running game. However, the author never discusses or explains how one would ensure these randomly generated level chunks match up in a way that actually makes sense functionally.

That is, since the level chunks are being randomly generated in a right to left manner, what constrains the level chunks such that the individual chunks match in terms of gaps, floating chunks, etc? For example, if one level chunk terminates with a gap, and then the subsequent level chunk starts with yet another gap, even if the player jumps at the first gap, the next gap will be impossible to clear and so the player will fall and die.

Again, the author makes no mention of how randomly generated level chunks are controlled so that they dovetail properly. Just to be precise, the author draws a distinction between level design that is of a fixed master design versus level design that is randomly generated. The book covers the random generation aspect but again, there is no information regarding the coding etc necessary to ensure that said random generation results in running/jumping surfaces that are functional and make sense.

The awfulness of this book just increases with the idiocy of numerous references to figures in terms of colors despite the fact that the book IS GRAY-SCALE!

I understand that this is a common practice with Packt books, and theoretically the reader is supposed to access supplementary materials hosted on Packt's website (I've bought a number of their books and they all follow this pattern). There are several problems with this.

First, Packt only actually grants access to the initial purchaser who buys direct from Packt. If you buy from a different source, you have to request the files, which is frustrating because it's a bunch of hoops to jump through just to be able to actually use a book for which I've already paid an exorbitant fee. I’m still waiting for access to files that I requested for a different title.

Second, even if you obtain the supplementary files, the book is literally useless unless you're sitting next to a computer and constantly referencing the color figures. This is a total deal breaker for me because the entire reason I buy physical books (rather than, say, ebooks), is that I want to read them while I’m commuting on the bus or train, or while I’m waiting for a meeting or an appointment. If the book requires access to a computer and/or the Internet, then I can’t make use of it in those situations.

I actually returned this book as “defective” for this exact reason. A book that costs nearly fifty dollars should be complete in and of itself, I shouldn’t need additional equipment like a computer in order to actually utilize the book.

The problem of color references in a gray-scale book isn’t just an aesthetic visual issue. Many of the figures in this book use color to differentiate between various different trigger points that control game play/flow. Without the actual colors, the reader has no way of knowing which of, say four circles, is the green one that triggers X and which is the red one that triggers Y etc etc (for example).

This is the point where I was so flabbergasted and incensed by all the problems with this book that I gave up trying to deal with the idiocy of this poorly structured nightmare and returned it to Amazon as “defective”. I never thought I’d ever experience a “defective” book, but one whose material relies on color figures that are actually rendered in uniform gray-scale, is definitely defective.

About the Author
Judith N. Martin is currently Herberger Professor of Communication in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University. She received her Ph.D. in speech communication from the Pennsylvania State University. She also studied at the Universit� de Grenoble for a year, and was involved in study aboard administration for a number of years. She also has experience in cross cultural training and has co-authored three books with Prof. Tom Nakayama. Her current research interests focus on: the role of communication in cross cultural transitions, white identity and and communication, and pedagogical issues in teaching intercultural communication.

Thomas K. Nakayama is Professor and Director of the Department of Communications Studies, Northeastern University. He received his Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Iowa. He has been a Fulbright lecturer at the Universit� de Mons-Hainaut in Belgium and Libra Professor at the University of Maine. He has taught at Arizona State University, California State University, San Bernardino and the University of Iowa. His interests are in critical theory, cultural studies, and rhetorical studies.

Not my favorite book:

I am reading this book for my university course "Intercultural Communication" and have found that the essays within the book are at times discriminatory in their own sense. One of the essay authors writes about crossing borders in his Irish heritage and then into his self-affirmed homosexuality. Later in his essay, he inserts a blatant reference to the priesthood being a hiding place for homosexual men. This is totally false and truly offensive. If any essay were to even mention such a reference about homosexuals, different races, other religions, this would not be allowed into the "politically correct" book. Sure, the book offers different essays from different experiences - but again, it falls back to the analysis of the experiences that is always always the same. Overall, I don't like this book because, to me, it is not truly intercultural - it is liberal cultural. This assessment is coming from a tri-liguist study abroad student with a lot of exposure to many different cultures. I can tell a narrow-minded book when I see one. The essays are all written from a liberal assessment and no other types of assessment of the experiences in the essays. Therefore, I find the book hypocritical and lacking the many other shades of color that other philosophies could have offered and enriched.

The Jesus I Never Knew Participant's Guide

The Participant's Guide is good. Some questions are excellent and are thought-provoking. The movie clips in the study are a great visual stimulant for thought and discussion. Some of the questions in the guide are less relevant to the material in the book and could be replaced by better questions in my opinion, or at least could be tied in better with the material in the book.

Excellent group study guide

After reading Philip Yancey's book, The Jesus I Never Knew, I was determined to share the contents with members of my church and other friends. I also longed to see the films to which Yancey referred. The Participant's Guide, with 6 lessons, has made it easy to share this message with a Lenten class. There is actually material within for 12 or 18 weeks, but it is possible to focus with 6. Coupled with Yancey's DVD, which does contain clips from the films, the book has provided lively discussion and great learning. It challenges one to go further into the Bible for more personal study.

'The Damned Fraternitie': Constructing Gypsy Identity in Early Modern England, 1500–1700 examines the construction of gypsy identity in England between the early sixteenth century and the end of the seventeenth century. Drawing upon previous historiography, a wealth of printed primary sources (including government documents, pamphlets, rogue literature, and plays), and archival material (quarter sessions and assize cases, parish records and constables's accounts), the book argues that the construction of gypsy identity was part of a wider discourse concerning the increasing vagabond population, and was further informed by the religious reformations and political insecurities of the time. The developing narrative of a fraternity of dangerous vagrants resulted in the gypsy population being designated as a special category of rogues and vagabonds by both the state and popular culture. The alleged Egyptian origin of the group and the practice of fortune-telling by palmistry contributed elements of the exotic, which contributed to the concept of the mysterious alien. However, as this book reveals, a close examination of the first gypsies that are known by name shows that they were more likely Scottish and English vagrants, employing the ambiguous and mysterious reputation of the newly emerging category of gypsy. This challenges the theory that sixteenth-century gypsies were migrants from India and/or early predecessors to the later Roma population, as proposed by nineteenth-century gypsiologists. The book argues that the fluid identity of gypsies, whose origins and ethnicity were (and still are) ambiguous, allowed for the group to become a prime candidate for the 'other', thus a useful tool for reinforcing the parameters of orthodox social behaviour.

Frances Timbers holds a PhD in British History from the University of Toronto (2008). She has published two books and three articles that deal with issues of magic, witchcraft and gender in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. Timbers is currently on a self-imposed sabbatical in Panama, where she spends her time writing about gypsies, teaching yoga, biking to the beach and caring for seven rescued cats.

About the Author
Ralph L. Webb is a Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, and has published over 275 papers in the general area of heat transfer enhancement and has eight U.S. patents on enhanced heat transfer surfaces. He has performed research on enhanced heat transfer in boiling, condensation, fouling, air-cooled heat exchangers, electronic equipment cooling, forced convection for gases and liquids, wetting coatings to promote drainage of thin liquid films, and frost formation.
Prof. Webb is the Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Enhanced Heat Transfer and is an editor of Heat Transfer Engineering journal. He is a recipient of the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award, the UK Refrigeration Institute Hall-Thermotank Gold Medal, and the AIChE Donald Q. Kern award. He is also a Fellow of ASME and ASHRAE and a Life Member of ASME.

Nae-Hyun Kim is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Incheon, Korea. He earned his Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University in 1989 under the supervision of Prof. Webb. Since then, he has been closely working with air-conditioning and refrigeration industries, where enhanced heat transfer technology has been successfully employed. Prof. Kim has published more than 30 international journal and conference papers related to boiling, condensation, fouling, and forced convection of liquids and gases. He is a member of ASME and ASHRAE.

This second edition is published 11 years after the first edition. Many changes have occurred in the field of "enhanced" heat transfer since December 1993, which was the cut-off date for the 1st edition. The 2nd edition provides a general update to the initially published 17 chapters and adds two new chapters: Micro-Channels (Ch 18) and Cooling of Electronic Equipment (Ch 19). The net additions to the book include 188 pages, 126 new figures, 18 tables, and a doubling of the number of problems (from 25 to 50) in the Problem Supplement.

A major addition to the book includes a Reference Bibliography CD. This CD contains 9500 references. We have attempted to include all published journal papers since about 1960, with a number of earlier references. The references on the CD are in pdf format and are listed in Author-Date format. One may use the CD to search by author, journal, year, or subject key word.

The subject of "enhanced" heat transfer has become much more important to industry with progressing time. Use of relatively complex geometries were initially limited by manufacturing process. However, new manufacturing methods now allow manufacture of many complex surface geometries. Some enhanced surfaces (e.g., boiling and condensing tubes) are now in their 4th generation. As noted in Chapter 1, nearly all heat exchangers used in the air-conditioning and automotive industries are "enhanced" geometries. Further inroads are being seen in the electronic cooling, process and power industries.

This book is primarily directed at practitioners of high performance heat transfer concept. However, it is also suitable for use as a text in a second level (or graduate level) heat transfer course. The 50 problems in the Problem Supplement can be used by readers to test their understanding, or to support teaching an academic course. The book also contains a number of "example problems." The senior author taught a course on "Enhanced Heat Transfer" for a number of years at Penn State University. The present book and the problems are a product of this course.

Fundamental and even graduate level courses in heat transfer typically focus on simple geometries, such as flat plates and circular tubes. "Enhanced" heat transfer surfaces typically involve complex geometries. Study of material on "enhanced" heat transfer will enhance the student's ability to address such complex geometries. Tools to address or analyze such geometries are a key element of the material in the book.

The book is now jointly co-authored with Prof. Nae-Hyun Kim, who completed his PhD with Prof. Webb in 1987.
