About the Author

Richard Abcarian (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-seven years. During his teaching career, he won two Fulbright professorships. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and its compact edition, he is the editor of a critical edition of Richard Wright's A Native Son, as well as several other literature textbooks.

Marvin Klotz (PhD, New York University) was a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-three years and won Northridge's distinguished teaching award in 1983. He was also the winner of two Fulbright professorships (in Vietnam and Iran) and was a National Endowment for the Arts Summer Fellow twice. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and several other textbooks, he coauthored a guide and index to the characters in Faulkner's fiction.

Samuel Cohen (PhD, City University of New York) is Associate Professor of English and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri. He is the author of After the End of History: American Fiction in the 1990s (University of Iowa Press, 2009), coeditor (with Lee Konstantinou) of The Legacy of David Foster Wallace (University of Iowa Press, 2012), Series Editor of The New American Canon: The Iowa Series in Contemporary Literature and Culture, and coeditor of JMMLA. He has also been published in such journals as Novel, Clio, Twentieth-Century Literature, The Journal of Basic Writing, and Dialogue: A Journal for Writing Specialists. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is author of 50 Essays: A Portable Anthology and coauthor of Literature: The Human Experience.

The press dispatches of October 1, 1919, heralded the news that another race riot had taken place the night before in Elaine, Ark., and that it was started by Negroes who had killed some white officers in an altercation. Later on the country was told that the white people of Phillips County had risen against the Negroes who started this riot and had killed many of them, and that this orgy of bloodshed was not stopped until United States soldiers from camp Pike had been sent to the scene of the trouble. Columns were printed telling of an organization among Negro farmers in this little burg who were banded together or the purpose of killing all the white people, the organization being known as the Farmers' Household Union. As a result of these charges over one hundred Negro farmers and laborers, men and women, were arrested and jailed in Helena, Ark., the county seat of Phillips County. One month later they were indicted and tried for murder in the first degree and the jury found them guilty after six minutes of deliberation. Twelve were sentenced to die in the electric chair—six on December 27th and six on January 2nd, and seventy-five of them were sent to the penitentiary on sentences ranging from five to twenty-one years! Several national bodies among colored people, notably the Equal Rights League, sent letters of protest to Governor Brough, but press dispatches reported that the governor refused to interfere, because he believed the men had received justice. Thereupon, the Chicago branch of the Equal Rights League sent telegrams to Senators Medill McCormick and Curtis, chairman on committee on race riots and Congressman Martin B. Madden asking the federal government to take some on to protect these men and see that they got justice.

Unusually Clear

A very modern, persuasive interpretation on Qabala and the Tree of Life that leaves most others in the dust. Originally written in 1976, it doesn't feel at all dated when one reads it. The illustrations are very helpful. I've studied quantum physics in depth and esotericism throughout my life. Peering deeply into the foundations of being reveals mysteries and paradoxes that both esotericism and quantum physics seek to explain. Not so foolish as to say this resolves the mystery--but shines a bright light on it.

This is a truly amazing and enjoyable book. It gives some significant details about The Tree of Life, application and understanding of Hebrew and much, much more. For anyone who is exploring religion, science, the meaning of life and death, this is an incredible book!

Qabalah and a Quantum World

This book is great at presenting a very broad and far reaching interpretation of Qabalah in light of psychology and physics. I bought it in hopes of finding quantum physics concepts (ie scientific facts; what we can see without doubt) synced up with the very abstract system of the Qabalah. Specifically I wanted to see how our world could fit onto the tree of life glyph and what meanings someone farther along than me may have been afforded by doing this.

The author has condensed a broad interpretation into a relatively small amount of pages by using a wide variety of visual illustrations that proceed to deliver a cumulative view beyond words. For anyone seeking to use the Qabalah as a means to expand their view of how it all fits together and get an idea of what kinds of things are, for lack of a better word, unfolding, I cannot recommend this gem enough. The author admits his interpretation is just that, an interpretation, but damn, what an interpretation it is. I still read this book a chapter here a chapter there and mull it over to recognize and experience aspects of it in my life. Hope this helps.
