An essential addition to public health literature

As Paul Farmer described it, "Global surgery is the neglected step-child of global public health." Without a doubt, that was true when he said it a few years back and continues to be true, though there is finally progress being made. Books such as this one are as essential for the conversation they start as they are for the content contained within. Luckily, this book succeeds on both counts.

Both of the authors of this books, one a urologist and the other a general surgeon, have extensive experience in global surgery - both seen as a medical mission and, as they hope to develop it, as an element of public health. They have drawn liberally from these experiences, as they critically evaluate the (paucity) of literature available in the journals. Naturally, the book begins with an exposition on the current global burden of surgical disease, thought to be about 11% of DALY's in low and middle income countries (and expanding as non-communicable disease continues to skyrocket), and contrasts that with the minimal amount of money and effort that has been expended. The book then delves deeper into the usual suspect of public health concepts, such as measurements of burden, cost-effectiveness, etc.

For those who have not heard of global surgery, the first portion of the book will be eye opening. For those who have some experience with the concept, it is the next portion that elucidates nutrition, trauma, obstetric care, the acute abdomen, and fairly basic procedures such as non-incarcerated hernia repair. The book goes into some detail about the specific disease related DALYs lost and the cost-effectiveness of intervention in each particular area. (These concepts are expanded upon in the last section of the book).

In addition to the above, what I found most valuable was the discussion of tailoring the delivery of surgical services to a given regions needs AND cultural attitudes. There are specific examples of a Himalayan cataract organization, one of the author's efforts to bring laparascopy abroad, and others. This leads into a discussion on the importance of disruptive innovation and collaboration with our engineering and design colleagues in coming up with cheaper solutions that are also effective. You cannot just give expensive CT scanners to low-income hospitals, as they will not be able to afford the upkeep and repairs. Instead, we must find ways to replicate the success of initiatives that have found indigenous solutions, such as the use of mosquito nets as hernia meshes.

Overall then, I think this is an excellent synthesis of the global surgery knowledge to date (with ample references). Like many of these global public health books, I don't know that more experienced individuals will come away with a huge amount of concrete data or plans, but instead a deeper understanding of where we are today and where we are currently headed. Given that surgery is still on the outside looking in to the world of public health (especially in terms of NGO's), this is a conversation that needs to be continued.

Shift Happens!

I feel the need to let you know what a huge impact "Navigating 2012" has made on me, my life and my thought-process. I have been on an accelerated spiritual path since the age of 14 (I am now 64). I have read thousands of books along the journey, seen many "enlightened" teachers, been to countless groups and seminars. When I got a kindle for Christmas, I started browsing the genres and came across your book. I have always been deeply interested in the 11:11 phenomena and for the past decade, the 2012 shift. Early on, I read what Edgar Cayce told us about when the Mayan calendar would end. He called it a "polar shift." Many interpreted this to mean the physical north/south poles would reverse, causing major mayhem and castastrophe. That never felt right to me, although I did recognize it as a possibility. Through the years, I've arrived at the same conclusion that you espouse in your groundbreaking book. And upon finishing the book, have actually felt/seen palpable changes in how I view the world, other people, the future. It's an understatement to say it has had a profound effect on me. And it was immediate. And thank you for making it available for kindle!

A Real Energy Worker

I was in one of Dr. Michael's teleseminars recently, and I was delighted to learn that he has advanced beyond the usual "how to protect yourself as an empath" offerings of others, into spiritual techniques for moving energy in your body and for interacting with consciousness outside the human mind and body.

He reminded me how to extend heart energy to a tree and to say hello. The tree outside my window's response was "It's about time, I've been waiting for you." He reminded me that the earth and trees, living as they do at slower frequencies, "eat" the lower-energy emotions that we humans like to discard, just as humans breathe trees' waste oxygen.

Having practiced Taoist meditation, chi kung, basic shamanistic journeying and more, and having experienced the truth of such practices by feeling them in my body (if I feel the chi move I know I'm not just just visualizing it), I can assure you that this man's expertise in the world of Spirit is real.

He does it again...

Until today, I've never reviewed anything on amazon.com and I use it regularly. I couldn't pass up the opportunity today to recommend this and all of Dr. Smith's work. I have and will continue to read everything Dr. Smith writes or records. He is gifted in his ability to help those who are intuitive/empaths to "navigate" this special gift, especially in a time of energetic change. All of this has been new to me and I wondered if it was slightly woo-woo, but I have found firm ground to stand on... and that's not woo-woo! I highly recommend this book and all of Dr. Michael R. Smith's other books, mp3s, website, etc.!! Go for it! You will be glad you did!

Get correct edition

Amazon's listing for this book is very confusing....as seems to often be the case with Amazon. The 5th edition was released in 2003 (ISBN # 0072553928) and the 4th edition was released in 2001 (ISBN # 0072497017). Vastly different books and more care by Amazon should be given when listing books. It can be done.....Barnes and Noble does it at their website.

Be careful when purchasing this book.

Basic introduction with a few bright spots

This book serves as a basic introduction to retail, though it often feels like "baby talk". It basically describes, without much analysis, the types of policies retailers adopt in several areas including merchandising, inventory management, ordering, HR, finance, store layout, etc. Good as a reference to what others are doing, but not at the cutting edge of retail.

Michael K Jones is an author and historian.Michael Jones is well-known for his innovative, controversial studies of warfare. A former university lecturer in medieval history, he now works as a freelance writer, presenter and battlefield tour guide. He has written numerous articles on warfare for journals. Since 1984 he has been guiding visitors around battlefields, including Stalingrad, Bannockburn, and the battlefields of the Hundred Years' War.

This book turns accepted Soviet history on it's head,.. brilliantly!

This book is as David Glantz says in the foreward, "a milestone" in the study of the Soviet side of the Battle. It turns a lot of the already accepted history on it's head. I loved reading it.

If you have read the other great works on this Battle and have a basic understanding of the battle's timeline, than this is a must read. It brings detail and life to people like Krylov, Rodimstev and especially Vasily Chuikov. In fact the book doubles as a reading aid to the now out of print memoire of Vasily Chuikov.

It also discounts and re-arranges every old Soviet Propaganda account of the Battle, including Chuikovs. The new sources are Soviet veterans including at least three which I can remember seeing in the BBC documentary War of the Century. I was stunned and a little hurt even to find out some of the most famous episodes and legends of this Battle were lies. I won't spoil the surprises for you. But what makes this book so amazing is that the new "truths" that Michael Jones has pieced together are even more compelling and authentic stories than the originals.

I was very happy to finally read a history of the Russian side of this story that was not ashamed of saying that the Red Army at Stalingrad was a heroic group of soldiers who fought to the death because in their minds it was the right thing to do. Their general's example of courage and determination taught them that they were fighting a must win cause. Often other authors on the subject play up Stalin's terror against his own people as a chief motivator for their will to fight. While it was most certainly true that Stalin ruled with an iron fist, it is also true that the atrocities carried out by the Nazis were certainly adequate motivation to fight an ultimate battle of survival against a 'hated invader.'

I would not recommend this book as your first introduction to the Battle of Stalingrad. It only covers the Soviet side of the battle and only within the city itself. Also I believe the author assumed the reader would have some background on this battle so he doesn't repeat a lot of the basic details of the battle, except for when he's about to offer some new evidence to discount it!

I recommend reading Anthony Beevor, John Erickson, Vasily Chuikov (out of print but available used on line), Joel S. Hayward, Stephan Walsh and even the classic William S. Craig versions of the story first before approaching this book.

Excellent account of Stalingrad.

Michael K. Jones has written an extraordinary account of Stalingrad told by the Soviet veterans of the battle. As one reviewer has pointed out Jones' book challenges some of the myths of Stalingrad particularly from the Russian side. However, the crux of the book is material from the Soviet 62nd Army and accounts by Russian veterans of the battle present a harrowing account of life and death in the Stalingrad.
A book like this is long overdue. In the past many books even the excellent one by Beevor gives a panoramic view of the struggle at Stalingrad. Others have focused on the German accounts and documents readily accessible in the west. However, an in-depth study of the common Soviet soldier fighting in Stalingrad has been missing until now. Michael K. Jones has filled a huge void in Stalingrad literature.
If you are an enthusiast of the "German" side of the battle there is few if any German accounts in the book. However, the author has used German material to cross-reference the "Russian" accounts and documents of the struggle. For those stuck on the German side you will come to appreciate the German struggle at Stalingrad by becoming ferocious resistance of their Soviet opponent too often dismissed as a Communist automaton. In this book the Red soldier is not only motivated by fear of commissars and the Gulag but more importantly fiercely motivated by love of country to fight an invader to the death even against hopeless odd.
Michael K. Jones "Stalingrad" is a must for any serious student of the battle!!!

At last!

At last a book which pays tribute to the Red Army commanders and soldiers defending Stalingrad, giving them the full credit they deserve, without any distortions, using nothing but real facts. Not all soldiers or commanders were heroes, but on the other hand those who were have not "been forced to", as it had been usual to believe for so many years in the west. Moreover, heroism was contagious, like said Chuikov, commander of the Soviet 62nd Army who did not give up in this unequal and tragic fight, and to whom the book is largely devoted. One of the major leitmotiv is the role of the will, courage and leadership by example of so many commanders in this army, along with a deep, genuine care for their subordinate soldiers, as opposed to the traditional belief that Red Army men were thrown into battle at the point of a gun, driven like cattle and forced to charge in bloody assaults. Using multiple testimonies and new evidence, the author demonstrates that the battle of Stlalingrad could NOT have been won by fear and coercition only. The main factor was somewhere else, in an intangible spiritual force never seen before that was so particular to Stalingrad. That aspect has long been overlooked and diminished in the Cold War years, and even after if you consider a well-known bestseller published in late 90s which sometimes seems to be more focusing on anti-communist propaganda than on the battle itself. Only recently the real motivation factors for the incredible Soviet stand at Stalingrad are beginning to be analysed and the truth brought to light without any bias.
M. Jones relies mainly on veterans' accounts, these provide the backbone material and the book is totally structured around them. The approach is thematical rather than chronological, and deals extensively with the psychological aspects. Some myths forged in the Soviet era are finally deconstructed without diminishing the bravery of the defenders, on the contrary: whereas events are described in their real context we learn about new heroes and yet unknown facts.
A splendid contribution to the knowledge in military history.
