Gail A. Eisnitz (San Rafael, CA), winner of the Albert Schweitzer Medal for outstanding achievement in animal welfare, is the chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association. Her work has resulted in expos�s by ABC’s Good Morning America, PrimeTime Live, and Dateline NBC, and her interviews have been heard on more than 1,000 radio stations. Her work has been featured in such newspapers as The New York Times, Miami Herald, Detroit Free Press, Texas Monthly, Denver Business Journal, Los Angeles Times, and US News & World Report. Eisnitz was the driving force behind a front-page expos� in The Washington Post documenting slaughterhouse atrocities. Corruption and cruelty of factory slaughterhouses exposed

Ms. Eisnitz is frank and candid in her exposure of the uglier side of factory farming. Slaughter of live animals is never pretty, but in many of the USDA supervised plants, the conditions are unbelievably cruel and digustingly filthy. The workers are exploited, placed in harm's way, and are treated little better than the animals they have to process. The animals themselves meet terribly slow deaths when stun bolts fail and stick pit knives don't cut deep enough to allow them to bleed to death before skinning and gutting. And if the cruelty isn't enough to grab you, wait until you read about the offal blocked drains that flood slaughterhouse floors with blood and fecal material. Wait until you read about manure being classified as a "cosmetic defect" that can simply be rinsed off and the meat passed off as USDA select to an unsuspecting public. This book will turn your stomach and make you angry.
You have probably already read many of the reviews and a majority of them come from vegans and vegetarians. Well, I'm not one of them. I raise meat animals and I eat meat. This book is important to me because I believe that Americans have a right to eat meat and not worry about it killing them with E. coli or Clostridia infections. I believe Americans should be able to believe that the USDA seal means the meat is safe and was killed in a humane fashion. Right now the American meat eating public is being betrayed by the USDA and "Slaughterhouse" details this with painstaking research and first-hand accounts.
"Slaughterhouse" is graphic and readers should expect it to be disturbing. But it is also very, very accurate. I've toured several slaughterhouses myself and found conditions similar to what Ms. Eisnitz has described. The USDA needs to step up enforcement of the Humane Slaughter Act, they need to POLICE the industry they oversee, not just sit idly by.
In short, this book might not make you a vegetarian, but it WILL make you an activist.

got feces?

If you eat meat (in America), the answer is yes. Fact: Your tax dollars are helping to fund an organization (the USDA) that facilitates the CONSUMPTION OF FECES by you and your family on a daily basis. (Note: I am 46 and a vegetarian for just 2 weeks now, not a long-time veteran of PETA or any other animal rights group. My outrage is no less...) The USDA stamp/seal of approval is a colossal hoax perpetrated on the American public. The agency is, plain and simple, a timid puppet of the meat industry. (No wonder Europe doesn't want our poultry!) Paul & Linda McCartney's famous quote (Google it) has nothing on this book. If I had the resources, I would buy truckloads of this book and give them away. Gail Eisnitz jumps my list of people I'd most like to meet to Number One. What an incredibly brave woman. (And thank you Prometheus for having the stones to publish it.)
USDA: United States Death Agency or United States Disease Apathy. Take your pick. Either way, an absolute disgrace, blight, and embarrassment to all Americans.

the best book of its kind

This book, more than any other, is the reason why this vegetarian is slowly transitioning to veganism.

This book tells the haunting stories of slaughterhouse workers brave enough to sit for an interview with a remarkable undercover journalist, Gail A. Eisnitz. There is very little of Eisnitz in this book--she focuses largely on industry facts and the workers' stories, but the result is a book that gives voice to the animals beaten, burned alive, dismembered while conscious, left to starve, existing without space to move, tortured from birth to death.

The way the modern slaughterhouse works is not only incredibly cruel to the animals but dangerous for the workers. Their frustrations, unfortunately, are often taken out on the animals. Take it from a worker who put it this way: "See, I’m an ex-Marine. The blood and guts don’t bother me. It’s the inhumane treatment. There’s just so much of it."

this book is written with thought given to simplisity, and good taste, all ingredients are easy to find, the pictures in this book are a rare find, the food looks exactly in this book as it would on my table, what you see is what you will make, no trick photography here.

Yes it's digital but

This is a good book for learning proper ways to can meats. While at first I was a bit surprised how short the meat canning part was i realized that there are not a lot of directions to actually can meat so 50 pages of how to are not required.

The recipes look so tasty and I can't wait to try them, I don't have my canner yet as I ordered it earlier today but will update this post once I actually use some recipes.

There was a reader who gave this a bad review because its digital... Heck on the first couple of pages it tells you she is working on a hard copy of this book... And any recipes I enjoy will get printed and filed so easy peezy no whining required!!!!

The book has great links to USDA food safety guidelines for canning meats and other recommendations.

Also the canner I bought (all American 921canner) is what she uses and recommends the Manuel itself for great canning recommendations.

All in all I am happy with my purchase.....

Good argument, though blighted by ingorance of economics and axes to grind

Why History Matters should be read by everyone who is a teacher or student of history. There are innumerable books on historical themes, but few which make an effort to justify the study of the subject at a time when history in schools is threatened by debasement by the citizenship lobby and vocational course providers.

Tosh argues that history is a lively and relevant subject, emphasising the need to study historical themes to make sense of the current world. He invokes plenty of good examples to illustrate his argument - from the occupation of Iraq in 1917 to the consensus in British Government over the formation of the NHS in the 1940s when Conservatives and Labour agreed on several of the tenets of the new institution.

Tosh is a man of many niche interests and prejudices. Nothing wrong with this, of course, but he does hammer home a cliched and one dimensional argument undermining those who uphold the nuclear family as the basis of social life, claiming the 'Victorian' happy family never existed in practice and was merely an edifice of social and female opression. His political bias is all the commonplace liberal left tolerance for everything, and plenty of money that must grow on trees to pay for it all. He is unaware of the trade offs between personal responsibility and welfare that must be adhered to in order for civil society to be a fair and functioning one. And his views on September 11 could be straight from a Guardian editorial:

'Fred Halliday pointed out that the attack only made sense when it was seen as a convergance of a number of processes, not all of which had previously been considered together: the growth of Islamic fundamentalism; the collapse of central power in several Islamic countries; the resentment against US intervention in the Middle East, especially since the Gulf War; and the instability of international relations since the end of the Cold War'.

Oh yeah? US pulls out of the Middle East, the international order stabilises and those rational thinking Jihadist types will leave us alone. The hell they will. They want some dark and barbaric conception of an Islamic caliphate, not a quiet and isolationist America.

Aside from the naive liberal pap of his political view, Tosh's argument is worth considering. He evaluates the worth of history from a number of angles, including public history and the ability of the subject to arm powerfully informed citizens. And this is an argument that badly needs to be made.

The classic cocktail book; not for beginners

The Savoy guide has for a long time been seen as the end-all be-all of cocktail books. The plethora of classic recipes and witty quips the pepper the pages make this a favorite of cocktail aficionados everywhere. There are only two warnings I have about this book: 1. Many of the recipes refer to either out of production ingredients or ingredients whose recipes have changed. Therefore one should take caution when trying to make the cocktails using the exact recipes. 2. For one newly initiated into the cocktail world, this book gives no real introduction into the proper techniques and principles behind making cocktails.

Nice historical list of turn-of-the-century cocktails

There are quite a few drinks in here that you've almost certainly never heard of as it seems to be a collection of drinks popular at a particular hotel/restaurant in the early 1900's. We've made several and some are better than others, but some call for ingredients that we've never even heard of and I'm pretty sure would have a difficult time finding if we really wanted to look. One strange thing I found was that there are almost no measurements given for the recipes; instead, they simply say things like "1/3 gin, 1/6 grenadine, 1/2 ginger liquor..." and the like. Basically they're just giving you proportional amounts so you can "size" your drink however you wish. It's not a problem, but I don't know that I've ever seen an entire book that gives drink recipes this way and it can take you a second or two on some of them to figure out actual amounts.

Enjoyable, but alas too short story

The book description was tempting and even if I suspected it was short, I went for it. The book is a promising start for series. The plot is interesting and the interpretation of a shifter a bit unusual.

Zac and Brody met each other while attending school, but nothing happened except some lusting after each other, watching from afar.
Brody is afraid that something serious had happened to one of his patients and believing the cover story saying Zac is a FBI agent, he asks for help.
The killer is more cunning than they had assumed and Zac and Brody come away only thanks to an ability the perpetrator didn't even suspect existed.

I was right about the length of this story. It is short and thus a bit pricey. And the relationship develops so fast that there are mere hours between the first kiss and the proposal. But then it could be explained by being fated mates, even if it is not mentioned.
Anyway, because of the short length of the story, the characters are a bit one-dimensional.

Confession time. I watched, and enjoyed Sharknado. But I didn’t expect Citizen Kane or even Fast and the Furious. Sometimes the secret to enjoying a movie, or a book, is to go in with lowered expectations. That’s the case with Bound to Brody by Ali Atwood.

I didn’t go into this short story anticipating a perfect tale and because of that I was able to enjoy it, despite several issues.

I’ll start with the good. Zac McQuade and Brody Maitland are interesting characters who I liked immediately. Despite being a government assassin, Zac is no monster. He has a strong bond with his mother and sister, as well as his new-born niece. Brody was a little less developed but still a fascinating guy.

Zac and Brody’s friendship began in college where both men were attracted to each other, but afraid to say anything. The disappearance of a young man brings Brody and Zac together where they quickly discover the mutual admiration. The sex between the two men was smoldering. I could feel the years of repressed desire finally exploding between the two hot men.

Now for the bad, there were a few grammar errors and incorrect words—palmed instead of pawned. There was also a great deal of clunky exposition and awkward dialogue that brought me out of the story.

The paranormal aspect of the story wasn’t totally explained with one part of Brody’s abilities seeming more like a deus ex machine than a well thought out plot device. The bad guy also didn’t seem realistic at all nor did his motivation. The chapters focused on him weren’t necessary and added nothing to the story.

The author has talent, I just don’t think it’s fully realized here. However, this could be an enjoyable read for those who like sexy shifter stories, as long as you know what you’re getting into.

When Zac McQuade comes home for his niece’s baptism, his college crush Brody Maitland pays him a visit. Hoping for a social call, he is disappointed when he wants his help tracking a missing patient. As the two investigate, things heat up both for them and in the mystery. Will secrets past and present separate them permanently?

Zac McQuade spent several years in the military after school. Upon his release from the military, he is contacted by a government agency to become an elite assassin. As a cover, he informs people that he is in the foreign investigations division of the FBI. After having completed his last assignment, he heads home to attend the christening of his niece and take a much needed breather from work.

Brody Maitland is a psychiatrist at the local university. He is worried when one of his patients disappears with no explanation. Having heard that his former crush is home to visit his family, he contacts Zac in hopes that he will help to unofficially investigate the disappearance of his patient. Zac, knowing that he isn’t trained for this despite his professed credentials, agrees to help Brody out if only to spend some time with him.

As the investigation progresses, they find that the missing student might be victim of a serial killer. While tracking down information, they come to realize that they had feelings for each other while in school. As this bond grows, it serves not only to bring them together but also will be used against them. The killer uses this growing bond to put the protagonists in jeopardy. Will the secret that Brody is keeping which could save them from the killer also destroy the building romance between the two heroes?

This is the first book in the new Shifters and Lovers series by Ali Atwood. There is much that I liked about the book. First, other than the fact the series name, the fact that one of the protagonists is a shifter is not revealed until near the end of the book. To extend this point, our shifter did not grow up knowing about paranormals as he was adopted at an early age. Another difference is that this is not a story of destined mate. It starts out as a story of unrequited love that soon evolves. The author sets up further books in the series as our heroes decide to find out if there are others like him.

I also am interested to see if Zac’s occupation will play in the hunt for more shifters. This is a good start to a new series in my opinion.

The cover art by Scott Carpenter is simply gorgeous. Two well built shirtless men dominate the top two thirds of the cover. The bottom third has a cougar ready to pounce. Nicely done.

We often think of height as something that is relative. In other words, a character only looks tall or short when standing alongside an object whose size the reader is already familiar with.
But this isn't the way it really works. Characters look tall, medium, or short in stature based on their own proportions, regardless of whether there is anything else to compare them to. Artists create this effect by using the character's own head as the unit of measurement to determine overall height. Generally, a cute character is 4 to 6 "heads" tall. An average character is 6 to 7 heads tall. A tall character can be 8 to 9 heads tall. And superstylish characters such as bishounen and bishoujo, as well as gothic characters, can be even taller. On the other end of the spectrum, supercute chibis can be as few as three or even two heads tall!

This is a nifty little guide. Some of the anatomy is off, though, but that can easily be dismissed because it really helps to learn how manga are drawn and gives the anatomy of humans stretched to the manga form.
