Only Kissing
The webcam showed only the two men kissing
In the eyes now
a wilderness
when the birds open
their beaks
not in song,
but a breath
escapes from the rigor
of killing and feeding
and climbing to find,
again, the swaying
of the grass, the nudging
a body makes as it moves,
no matter how
quietly, through
the world,
setting its neighbors
in motion
How do you sleep
when the siren
is your own exhaled cry:
"Oh Christ."

Review
"Suzanne Parker's Viral is a book of elegies for Tyler Clementi... A book like this could be fraught with sentimentality, yet the poems work, and the book works; the book expands the vitality and purposefulness of elegy because it offers insights into not only Clementi's experience, but tries to give some sense of the appalling behavior of Ravi and Wei." - Sean Singer for TheRumpus.net
"Viral is an extended elegy to Tyler Clementi, and a bold effort to understand his world and the people in it. The book is audacious in scope and imagination, complex in its empathy and rage." - Janlori Goldman, Jewish Currents
"[Viral] As a series, as a book-length treatment on a theme, it's extremely successful. I'm guessing most readers will read it front to back in a short time, and then reread and revisit the entire volume." - Valerie Fox, Poemsforthewriting.com
Viral, by Suzanne Parker, both embodies and outdistances its form: an extended elegy for Tyler Clementi (the Rutgers student whose privacy was brutally invaded by his roommate and sent out on the web, precipitating Tyler’s suicide). It exceeds the elegy form and becomes a shocked, beautifully anaphoric invocationa hopeless nonstop summons, a call-out to the lost oneto bring him back. These are relentlessly tender, impossibly empathetic poemswhich echo and clarify the body of grief '
the need to pass/through the impassable and land/in a space I fill, exactly.' The emotional tension is unbearable, but sustained, just as the human heart goes on, after unimaginable loss.” Carol Muske-Dukes
In language that is elegant, tender, and uncompromising, Suzanne Parker tells a story of violation and injustice not ripped from the headlines, but lost in them. Rage, as in all good art, is immersed in craft where it smolders still hot enough to scorch the reader. Parker turns tragedy into artnot for sensationalism, but an honoring of innocence, and love.” Kurt Brown
I admire poems that quarrelwithout preaching or redundancy with social injustice, with injustice, period. Part outrage, part elegy, these spare and exact poems move me deeply.” Thomas Lux

Applying art to the wound
By actually Lori
Suzanne Parker is a great poet--my personal favorite--even without this book. But the book, which examines the story of Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University student who committed suicide after his roommate web-cast his intimate encounter with another man, takes her work to a new level. Viral shows us in the best way how art can respond to tragedy--how we really NEED art to respond to tragedy, to give grief a voice, and to help us to make some kind of sense out of the unfathomable, terrible harm humans are capable of doing to each other.
