USMLE

Let me cut to the chase here. I am an assiduous USMLE studier and I own just about every text and QBank. When push comes to shove, you need to consolidate. FA + Microcards + Lange pharm cards + QBanks + Goljan audios are all you really need (I also recommend Underground Clinical Vignettes - Anatomy). I bought this book, along with many of the other DejaReviews, and they are generally worthless for boards purposes. I found DejaReview USMLE Step-1 good as an adjunct during second-year, but as I said before, as you get closer to the exam and begin to figure out what REALLY matters, it's the resources I listed in the second sentence, and that's it. DejaReview is good Q&A trivia-type questioning. But come the USMLE, you need vignette-skills (QBanks) and dense shelf knowledge (the other resources I listed).

Great review book, providing good clinical context to biochemistry.

I found the Deja Review Biochemistry to be a good concise book to REVIEW biochemistry while providing a clinical context to the material. It is a great study book for the USMLE Step 1, however I will not recommend using this book solely for a biochemistry course. I recommend using it in addition, after which it can be used by itself for exam preparation etc....

Great book to review biochem

I used Deja Review to review biochem towards the end of my second year before I started my dedicated Step 1 study period. The entire book can be easily read in less than two days, and it gives you a crash-review in biochem. Would I exclusively use this book to study for Step 1? No, because it has too much material. However, that being said, since FA poorly explains biochm concepts, refreshing your memory with this book makes going through the biochem section of FA much easier. Also, the 1st edition of this book is really, really bad, however, the second edition has major revisions and is an excellent resource.

Certainly does not live up to its title!

If you're thinking about buying a Vespa to repair, you should probably get this book. If you already have a Vespa in need of repair that you plan to do yourself, you're going to be disappointed with it.

I am a self-taught gearhead and I learned pretty much everything I know about engines and car repair from John Muir's "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive..." which I consider to be one of the greatest books ever written.

So I was in need of a Vespa book because I was elbows-deep in a rusty Vespa with the need to put it back together and decided this book might be easier and more fun to work from than a standard service manual (Haynes). I was very wrong. There are no schematics, no exploded parts lists and the provided wiring diagrams are tiny and completely useless.

The book offers many tips and advice, but not a lot of actual instructions. Some of the tips are helpful and exclusive to Vespas, but most of them are fairly obvious to anyone who has ever had any interest in repairing any motorized vehicle ever. The book does a poor job referencing itself and by the time you get to the last chapter, it's still treating you like you just picked it up and haven't read the preceding 133 pages.

There is plenty of good information about Vespas in "How to Restore and Maintain Your Vespa" but there is relatively little information addressing the actual "how-to" aspect of Vespa repair. This book would be a good companion book to go with a real service manual. Read the related chapter before you begin to get you thinking about the procedure. But it won't tell you how to do it.

A must book for the Vespa owner. The perfect companion to a Haynes' manual for your particular scooter. Between the two, you should have all the knowledge you need to tackle everything from routine maintenance through a major restoration (including a pretty tasty chapter on performance improvements).
The information is very accessible presented in an engaging style that encourages both a cover to cover read, or skipping about gathering bits here and there. If you ever considered owning one of these classics, but were abashed by the prospect of doing your own maintenance and restoration, this book makes it easy. There is a scooter mechanic within each of us. This book lets him loose.

General, but very good to have.

As noted in previous reviews, this is an excellent resource to use along with a more model-specific manual for your particular scooter. I am restoring a 1955 150cc and found that much of the information is specific to the GS, small-frame and P-series scooters, with not nearly as much for the less common models like my own. You can get a long way with this book and it's a very good reference for Vespa history and all, but you'll still need something like a Haynes as well if you're going to get elbows-deep in scooter innards.

About the Author

HIROSHI OZAWA is an associate professor at the Science University of Tokyo and Kendo kyoshi, 7th dan. He was born in Saitama prefecture in 1950 into a highly respected Kendo family which was instrumental in incorporating Kendo into the physical education curriculum as a core subject. He makes regular trips abroad to demonstrate and teach Kendo, and also writes books about samurai ethics.

Very good

I own both the Complete Kendo book and the Heart of Kendo book.
This book is by far better than the other 2 as far as providing technical information.

Pros:
- The pictures are much better drawn (at least when compared to the other 2 books). Still in some cases a photo would have been more useful.
- The section on kata is presented as numbered steps in 2 columns, one for uchidachi and the other for shidachi. This makes it much easier to understand.
- Many of the movements are described as numbered lists. The other 2 books I looked at just write long paragraphs of text making it very difficult to decipher, even after you've learned the movement in class.
- Goes thru a complete treatment on how to put on the equipment.
- Extensive coverage of waza.

Cons:
- The information in the book is not ordered in the same order as you would learn things in a Kendo class so you will need to hop around chapters.
- Sadly there is no index in this book either. I don't quite understand why in this day and age books don't have indices. All 3 Kendo books I own do not have them.
- The descriptions are rather brief so it reads more like a manual than a book.
- The sections on suburi describe that you should swing "big". So in most of the diagrams the shinai is shown drawn all the way behind and almost touching the person's back (even in shomen suburi). What the book does not say though is that this is intended initially to train beginners to swing big. But when you actually perform a strike you generally aren't supposed to swing that far behind your back. But I am nitpicking...
- Book does not cover equipment maintenance.
- There is some use of terms that are not defined in the book.
- Book does not explain how to put himos onto men.

I would recommend getting this book in addition to one of the other 2 books to fill in some missing gaps. However even after owning all 3 books I find none of them cover the full body of knowledge that a beginner encounters. So these books are no substitute for a real class (obviously).

More than just technique...

The path of the sword is not taken lightly. It involves practice, improvment and confidence in the technique. This book is a good way to get you started. It covers basic techniques, ettiquette, terms and some very good advice. I would recommend this book along with "Iai, the art of drawing the sword" by Darrel Craig as these books compliment each other very well.

Higly Recommended for Beginners.

As a beginner in Kendo this book has definately been helpful. Because the Japanese terms (or words) are used throughout the book it has helped me retain them (I couldn't seem to remember them when learned in the Dojo). It's filled with illustrations, however, I don't think any pictures could illustrate the moves enough. These illustrations combined with what you learn in the Dojo (or on video) should be sufficient, they are definately better than most. In the appendix is good information (and rules) on official Kendo tournaments. I'd say it's a must-have book for anyone new to the sport.
Topics that I would have liked to see, but does not include: There is nothing on the care and maintenance of the Bogu or Shinai, or how to select the proper equipment. There is nothing on testing and advancement (Kyu to Dan), although perhaps this varies from Dojo to Dojo anyway. I would have liked to see a chapter on Iaido as well (however, this is because Iaido is an essential part of our Dojo's Kendo training, this may not be the case with all Dojos).
Overall a great book. If you're looking for a book on Kendo and don't have this one, get it, you won't be sorry.

He is a senior consultant with BLP Management Consultants, and taught for Oracle University in South Africa for four years. John taught the DB10g New Features course and the DB10g Manageability and Performance seminars. To study for Oracle exam 1Z0-062 this is the one book you should consider (in addition to the Oracle 12c technical manuals)

Study of no single book will get you a pass on the 1Z0-062 Oracle Database 12c Certified Associate exam - you will have to spend many dozens of hours with the Oracle technical documentation. I have identified and used nineteen Oracle 11g manuals that had content relevant to the exam. But if you want a book that will help you study this is the one I recommend.

I have an online version of this book available at work through my employer but as I want to step up my study for Oracle exam 1Z0-062 I ordered the paperback edition to read when not at work. Had not Mr. Watson's skillful technical writing and mastery of the subject been excellent in most respects I would not have bothered to order the paper edition. I have compared the exam topics and the book's contents and everything is reasonably covered. Mr. Watson's treatment of the topics is good, sufficiently detailed and understandable. In most chapters I found the descriptions and explanations to be exemplary technical writing. Each chapter presents a coherent treatment of its subject. In short, this book is excellent in most respects -- it is one of the best books on Oracle I have ever seen or used. Now that I have read all the chapters I could find no significant mistakes which are often the bane of such books.

The technical editor at Oracle Press likely also deserves some credit for this excellent book. The Total Tester practice exam bundled with the book has fairly good questions and answers to test your knowledge.

Even though this book has my five-star recommendation it should be used as an introduction and not a substitute for study of the Oracle technical manuals. I have passed earlier OCA's by reading the Oracle manuals alone but Mr. Watson's book is a handy one-stop reference for exam prep. So if you are going to buy one book to prepare for the 1Z0-062 exam this is the one you should get. But absolutely do not neglect reading and consulting the Oracle 12c technical documentation available at the Oracle website and, perhaps needless to add, all relevant hands-on experience as a dba will help you imprint that knowledge. In that respect the hands-on-exercises in the chapters are useful.

Addendum (Feb 2015): After reading every chapter in this book and reviewing the Self-Test questions at the end of each chapter I believe there are some minor errors here and there. For example, in the Oracle on-line documentation it is stated "Be aware that RESOURCE no longer provides the UNLIMITED TABLESPACE system privilege." Therefore Chapter 8, Self-Test Question 2 has only a partially correct answer. Note that in the actual Oracle exam 1Z0-062 there is no partial credit for partially correct answers. Likewise there are some other Self-Test questions and answers in other chapters that are similarly muddled or incorrect. From my brief survey of the blogosphere apparently a number of DBAs are not aware of this specific change in 12c. Still I consider this one of the best Oracle exam prep books I have used.

Don't fully rely on it

It is a great book, very logically structured, but some of the new chapters (comparing to the previous edition) appear to have been written in a hurry, and after taking the 062 exam I can say that about 25% of the exam questions weren't covered at all in this book. So only use it as a support, don't rely on it for your exam success, or you really risk failing.

Great book from a smart brain

This book is a must have for anyone prepping for the 12c Install and Amin Exam. It is the most comprehensive book so far and covers all topics in the exam. For production environment however, you will need to supplement it with other 12c Admin books.

Introduction to Radio Frequency Design

What can you say about Wes Hayward that hasn't been said already? This book should be required reading for RF/Microwave designers. It covers all the basic and fundamental subjects of RF design with insight and clarity. I particularly liked the chapter on filter theory and design, crystal filters especially. The coverage of resonant circuits in general is very good. This is a staple in my brief case and rarely spends much time on the shelf. I recommend it highly to anyone in need of a good RF design reference text.

Terrible Title

I bought "Introduction to Radio Frequency Design" because thats exactly what I was looking for. I'm your average electronics hobbyist looking for an introduction to things like oscillators, frequency synthesis, RF filters, modulation techniques and other basics that relate to designing RF circuits. What I got was a book that focuses heavily (almost exclusively) on modeling RF circuits mathematically which makes the book almost useless for me and others looking for such "introductory" material. This book assumes that you've have all the mathematical and physics training that comes with something like an electrical engineering degree, so if that describes you and your interested in maximizing your RF circuits, then this may be the book for you. But if your interested in actual introductory material to basic RF design I'd suggest you find something else.

This classic book provides a well presented introduction to RF circuit design, focused on giving the reader a thorough grounding in the basic concepts needed to become a professional RF circuit designer. There is sufficient mathematical rigor to convince the pros, but not so much as to make the book inaccessable to students and more advanced amateurs. The author is an experienced state of the art RF designer and a life long "RF guy"--I've been reading his articles in QST magazine for 25 years. This experience and his devotion to the field come through strongly in his book. Though first published in the early 1980's, most of the material is basically timeless. I do hope Wes will someday revise it to include newer RF IC design as well. The book deserves to be in the library of every professional, and especially those just starting in the field.
