About the Author
David Landau has over thirty years of professional lighting experience working on feature films, TV shows, sit-coms, game shows, commercials, documentaries, industrial films, music videos and direct-to-consumer DVDs. Landau teaches lighting and cinematography at Fairleigh Dickinson University, US, where he also created the Cinematography track of study, but continues to work in the lighting industry, shooting low budget features and corporate videos, designing lights for theatre and working as one of the gaffers on the TV series Project Runway. A five-time Telly Award winner for lighting and cinematography, Landau is a member of IATSE Local 52, the University Film & Video Association and Media Communications Association International.

one of the best books on lighting for film that I have ever ...

As a self-taught cinematographer I can confidently state that this is an indispensable tome for anyone part of the revolution of filmmakers gaining their education through websites, collaboration, and trial and error. Truly, one of the best books on lighting for film that I have ever read. Mr. Landau's writing style is fluid, conversational, and easy to understand; and, his examples are derived from real world projects that he has crewed, and not conjecture based off of the work of others.

I purchased this book for the kindle and have found myself highlighting about 75% of what I read--that's incredible! I am no slouch when it comes to lighting, but there is just so much useful material between these pages that I can't help myself. Many of you may be familiar with the following scenario: the information on lighting that we unearth on the web or via other books on the subject is either woefully basic, or it is dependent upon absurdly expensive, power-hungry instruments that most of us will never use. Honestly, to my eye, this is the case of at least 75% of the material that I come across. Conversely, Mr. Landau stays true to the title, and teaches the reader all sorts of theory and application that is achievable with accessible instruments. This is precisely what I have been looking for for years now.

Do yourself a favor and purchase this book. If you are a beginner, this is going to rapidly ratchet your skills to a higher level; if you are a more advanced cinematographer or gaffer, this book will fill in the gaps necessary to make you shine far brighter than you ever have. Honestly, I can not recommend Lighting for Cinematography highly enough!

Two Thumbs Up!

Fantastic non-technical overview of lighting, with several different scenarios and anecdotes. Paired with the Set Lighting Technician's Handbook, one can receive a relatively encompassing education of lighting for cinematographers. Landau goes through different daylight interior/exterior and night time interior/exterior with stills to illustrate each of the his written examples. A great book on the design of lighting, but definitely needs to be paired with the Set Lighting Technician's Handbook for a full education. Great read!

A must read for production-quality filmmaking

David Landau is a talented and professional cinematographer as well as an excellent teacher. Being a past student of his, I appreciated every lesson he's taught me from basic lighting, netting and bouncing natural light, shooting at night, and that special trick that older interviewees appreciate that make their wrinkles less prominent.

Although training is required to become a master sushi chef like Takemura, who first presided over London's Nobu and has worked at New York's Nobu, one can make versions of the dish at home. What do you need to know to enjoy Japanese cooking at home?
Here, in Kimiko Barber's seminal work, is found the standards for all of Sushi preparation. From rice preparation (and, the variations on the delicate vinegar/sugar/salt seasoning for Sushi Meshi), to choosing and preparing fish, shellfish, and roe; and, the famous Japanese omelet and its variations; and, how to make pressed Sushi, Nigiri, Hand Formed, and Scattered Sushi - you simply cannot find a more concise and definitive guide.
Add to your bookshelf: Japanese Cooking, A Simple Art by Shizuo Tsuji; and, every book by Harris Salat and Tadashi Ono (Japanese Hot Pots, The Japanese Grill, Japanese Soul Cooking), the works of Elizabeth Andoh: Washoku: Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen,

Perhaps *the* book on sushi

No other work that I have ever laid my hands on has been such a masterful treatment of sushi, unless that work was a hefty tome that would end up languishing on a shelf. This book covers everything anyone from a beginner to a master would need, and does it in a total size that you can pack with you on a trip or in any kitchen.

What you get:

-History. It makes a massive difference to your sushi appreciation, and your cooking, when you know where sushi came from. Vinegar-laden rice began as a preservation method, protecting fresh coastal fish for inland transport. Tips like these provide insight into why you prepare sushi the way you do, that no simple ingredient list can ever convey.

-Information. Not only do you get a breakdown of traditional and modern ingredients and tools, but also thorough breakdowns of why you use what items and what the pitfalls may be- for example, how the "wasabi paste" in your local market probably isn't wasabi.

-Building blocks. It's been said that you can put basically anything into a sushi roll, so where a book really needs good focus is on preparing the rice, technique for rolling, and generally everything before the "recipe" of what to throw in the roll. This book includes all the building blocks in the necessary detail.

-Plenty of advanced tips. Individual butcher diagrams of common fish and how to prepare them. Recipes to put your fundamentals into practice are delicious and well placed, from the simple to the nearly impossible. Tool lists include all of the rare, authentic, and historic items so even a master chef might find a piece to experiment with.

Loved the book

I'm a sushi beginner and based on other people's review I purchased this book. I cooked sushi rice about 10 times now and it came out perfect every time (and I'm not using the rice cooker)! My rolls look and taste just like at a sushi bar. Great instructions and illustrations for everything: from all types of fish to necessary equipment and sushi making instructions. This book has what you'll need to learn how to make, serve and enjoy delicious and beautiful sushi. However, keep in mind that this book only mentions soy and tamari souses. I had to ask my local sushi shef the names of my favorite sauces he used on my sushimi and maki rolls: i.e. unagi (eel) and ponzu souses. Overall, I am very pleased with the book and literally cooking something new couple of times a week.

Philip D. Plowright is Associate Professor of Architectural Design, History and Theory at Lawrence Technological University. He is a founder of the systems-based think tank, synchRG, a registered architect, and Managing Editor of Enquiry/The ARCC Journal of Architectural Research. He has published and lectured widely around issues of meaning, interpretation and process in architectural design.

It's a must read

As an interior designer and history enthusiast pursuing a M.Arch, this book was recommended to me and I am so glad I bought it. The concepts and ideas helped me transition my interior design mind into an architectural way of thinking. It was a great supplement to read and reference during a studio course because it connected different ways of researching, as well as how those ways can be utilized in projects for meaningful design. I appreciated the deeply rooted historical context - not only was it educational on the history of architecture, but it provided a connection to the "why" part of architectural design. This book connected the dots for me in so many ways. Before reading this book, I primarily used reading and writing as forms of research and context, however, the examples in the book take research further. Now I find myself making diagrams in all my research papers! They are awesome! I anticipate using this book as a reference for years to come. Definitely buy it if you can; it's worth a lot more than it costs.

Wish I had this when I started architecture!

I really wish I had something like this when I first started architecture school. I have since obtained a Master of Architecture and I find that basic principles and concepts that I have had to dig for over the course of 9 years are clearly laid out in this treatise. It is not a "how to do architecture" book, but a great guide in the individuals own journey in architectural education.

Every first year architecture student should own a copy of this book. It lays out in a clear and understandable way the basic principles of architectural thinking and process methodology. Furthermore, the author does a good job of demystifying the erroneous notion that architecture is an arbitrary and strictly intuitive discipline. At the end of reading this book, the student will be able to navigate through various frameworks (Concept based, Type based, and Force based) and be able to deploy divergent and convergent thinking streams. Using the book as a guide in early design studios will help students discover which methodology is best for them in working through creative issues. Definitively something to add to the library.

The philosophical processes described within are instantly applicable to most aspects of design, offering a valid proof to naysayers remaining lost in the world of archi-babble.

The story was okay, the writing fantastic, but........Grace.
Oh, Grace *Shaking head*

I couldn't relate to Grace one teeny tiny bit. She was SUCH a good girl that I'm pretty sure she would eligible for sainthood. I liked Trevor, but together they just seemed a bit like oil and water. He mentions often that after the hectic life of being a spy that he wants peace and quiet.
Well, he's going to get it with Grace.
Probably to the point of dying of boredom.

The only time I really got excited during the book is when I got a peek into the imprisoned life of a former comrade that turned bad. His book is next, so I guess I'll get my fill, in it, of all the baddie goodness that was missing in My Notorious Gentleman.

I have read the previous five books in the Inferno Club series and loved them. But as Dean Martin said, 'You can't love 'em all'

MY NOTORIOUS GENTLEMAN by Gaelen Foley is an interesting Regency Historical Romance set in 1816 Thistleton,London. #6 in the "Inferno Club", but can be read as a stand alone."My Notorious Gentleman" is Lord Trevor Montgomery's story,a former spy in the "Inferno Club"! See,"My Wicked Marquess","My Dangerous Duke","My Irresistible Earl","My Ruthless Prince","My Scandalous Viscount(Beau and Carissa's Story)". Fast paced and filled with healing,passion and love. "My Notorious Gentleman" is a bit more laid back than the others in the "Inferno" series, to me, with the danger and action later in the story. Most of Trevor's story is in the passion and healing. With this said, you will not be disappointed in this story. Again, Ms. Foley has created a story that is well written, with characters who are charming as well as pulls the reader into the story. A very interesting story indeed! Trevor who has been betrayed both by a friend and a fiancee, must learn to trust and love again. But will he be willing to risk his heart again by engaging it in love? Miss Grace Kenwood,the parson's daughter,longs for love but feels she is a plain Jane, and no will love her or find her beautiful or resistible. Enter...Trevor,for to him Grace is a breathe of fresh air and the light to his darkness. Together, they revive and rebuild a town, Thistleton, find passion, and find their own place in the world. A wonderful story, again of love,forgiveness and healing. I enjoyed Trevor's and Grace's story! Well done, Ms. Foley! Received for an honest review from the publisher and Edelweiss.

Not an Inferno Club book but I loved it

This definitely didn't have any of the danger that the previous Inferno Club books had, but I quite enjoyed it. I liked it better than other Inferno ones to be honest. Less dashing around and random danger.

I liked having a large part of the book set in the country and I liked the personalities of both Grace and Trevor.

About the Author
Paul Insel, PhD is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has been the principal investigator of numerous NIH studies involving health education, mental health, blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and nutrition. He has authored 14 books and more than 100 articles.

Don Ross is Professor of Economics and Dean of Commerce at the University of Cape Town, and Research Fellow in the Center for Economic Analysis of Risk at Georgia State University.. He is the author of "Economic Theory and Cognitive Science: Microexplanation" (MIT Press, 2005), companion volume to "Midbrain Mutiny."
