Clear and concise guide

I really didn't know much about hypnosis / self-hypnosis before reading this guide. I had been talking to some friends about the level of stress I had been feeling lately and someone brought up self-hypnosis as a way of dealing with it.

I didn't even know that hypnosis could be used to treat such things. Anyway I ended up searching for a guide that would help teach me what I would need to know to do this effectively. It took some searching but, I found this guide and was really happy with it. Everything is laid out logically and there is a lot of actionable advice that I've been able to put to use.

The guide contains a lot of other sections not relating to stress that may be useful in other situations.

Hypnosis is a double-edged sword.

This book about hypnosis provided interesting facts about the topic, background complete with a timeline; its different types and benefits; self-hypnosis and more related topics. The author’s voice shifts from academic boring to self help and very inconsistent so she failed to connect to me as a reader. I loved the book cover, it looks interesting so I was drawn to read it. I also liked that the author provided the origins of hypnotism. For entertainment purposes, it was fine. But for educational purposes, I’d appreciate citations for the studies mentioned to give it a more accurate take than mere conjectures. As a guide for beginners, it’s a good introductory book to hypnosis. Mastery of the techniques for hypnosis, mind control, manipulation, and more by just reading this book is debatable. The background history became a little close to boring because it’s too long. The chapter about the risks of hypnosis should have been in the earlier part of the book and the conclusion is more like a part of the disclaimer.
A word of caution: self-hypnosis is okay to alleviate one’s stress to manageable levels. To start hypnotizing another person without proper training is another thing. You might open a can of worms you are not ready to deal with which can lead to more trauma to the person involved. I recommend it to people just wanting to read about hypnosis. But do not be deceived by the title, you will not be a master after reading it. It may lead you to more questions, so it’s up to you!

I have learnt a lot on Hypnosis, while reading this book. I earlier knew that Hypnosis is one of the tools used by psychologist in treating their patients, but reading this book showed me much more to hypnosis. The main use of hypnosis is in hypnotherapy which is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. In this process, the state achieved after hypnotism can be used as a way to attain a progressive type of relaxation. It can be used for treating physical, psychological or emotional disorders. Examples are; eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, stammering and tension.
Hypnosis is a process by which a person reaches a state of consciousness that is enhanced in such a way so that your focus will increase while other awareness's are decreased. Hypnotism is actually used as a short form of "neuro-hypnotism". It is defined as a state of nervous sleep that is different from the normal sleep we undergo. One should get this book and learn the benefits of hypnotism while discarding the misconceptions about it.

About the Author
Dr Jean-Claude Guimberteau is co-founder and scientific director of the Institut Aquitain de la Main, and past-President 2011-2012 of the French Society for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (SOFCPRE). Dr Guimberteau trained in hand and plastic surgery at the University of Bordeaux, under Professors Goumain and Baudet. He worked in microsurgery and transplantation, extending his surgical experience through working in the USA with Dr J M Converse and Dr Ralph Millard. With Professor Claude Verdan in Switzerland and Dr Harold Kleinert in the USA he wrote a book: New ideas in hand surgery He has developed our knowledge of the structure and function of tendon physiology, and pioneered techniques for secondary flexor tendon repair. Perhaps his most significant contribution to our understanding of human biology has come about through his innovative use of video-endoscopy to investigate the structure of the fascia in vivo, resulting in what is essentially a new concept of living tissue and a new ontology for human body architecture. It was originally an e-book, as were three science-fiction novels Ryan has also written. The plot is standard: a young boy’s father abandons him at the door of the Sixth, or fighting, Order of the national faith. He is raised to be a warrior, and becomes one of the most effective in the forces of his king, Janus, of the Unified Realm. But a number of vital questions arise as the story progresses, starting with why his father cast him out of the family and into the Faith in the first place. While the plot is standard, it is deftly and originally executed, as are the characters. They are complex characters, not archetypes. The setting is medieval-based, but with a number of original differences (especially the religion!). Ryan’s style makes Blood Song a page-turner. Apt turns of phrase, descriptions that linger, questions answered at unexpected times all make the story definitely superior to much of the genre. Superbly written coming-of-age fantasy

This book is in a class of its own. Engaging, fast-paced, an epic that doesn't bog you down with a hundred different point of views or side story arcs.

The story itself follows that of Vaelin Al Sorna, a scared young boy who grows up to be a natural born leader and strategist, feared and respected throughout the world. He reminded me of Inda from the Sherwood Smith books, destined from birth to be of great import to the realm, bonded to his brothers through shared hardships, denied satisfaction and relief to fulfill his duty. Cunning and intelligent, with enough compassion to walk the line between warrior and murderer, he fights with ruthless efficiency to make a difference, to try and do the right thing when all it seems his actions accomplish is more suffering, all the while battling his own inner demons and self-doubt. There are some strong themes present, of growing up and of lost innocence, of sacrifice and of betraying your morals and beliefs.

The structure of the book was reminiscent of "The Name of the Wind" in that it's told from the perspective of a scribe/historian chronicling the deeds of our protagonist as he narrates his tale in the present. This device does not detract from the story and break the immersion, rather it serves to set the scene for each consecutive portion of Vaelin's life, bringing the events that take place full circle; it does not in fact reveal the plot, but only adds to the suspense.

The world-building was solid. Never did I lack for any visual representation of the lands discussed, magical/religious/cultural systems mentioned, or felt confused about how things came to be.

The fact that this enormous tome could be purchased for the price of a soda astounds me. With such a high degree of writing and storytelling that kept me enraptured almost a full day and a half, I'd have expected it to have cost at least ten times as much and come with a number of literary awards attached. It really is one of those books I'll probably remember for the rest of my life.

WOAH!!

So I just spent the entire day (starting at 10:00 am and now it's 2:00 am) reading this book and it completely blew me away!! I'm not very good at writing comprehensive reviews, so I'll just highlight two things that I really loved about this book that I think is missing from a lot of other really good fantasy works (the ingredients that make it go beyond five stars).

1) I really hate the endless pages of self-loathing that many fantasy authors feel compelled to write whenever heroes need to kill. It's a very important point to carry across that killing, even in the name of "good", is sometimes necessary, but never without an incalculable price. Necessity cannot alchemize an evil act into something other. The heavy handed way in which this is usually done in fantasy fiction is when the hero rails ceaselessly against their own actions, decrying themselves as monsters, at which point they are embraced by some love interest who tells them that they are really a good person after all. It just always seemed to me that such self loathing is unbecoming in a hero since it's purely a selfish feeling that doesn't help anyone else. I can usually put up with this for like 20 pages but when it becomes a recurring theme, I get really annoyed. There's none of this in this book. I'm not sure exactly how the author managed to convey it, but there's a certain sense of dignity about Vaelin that tells you that he feels the weight of the lives he's taken without him resorting to whining (so he actually whines for about 2 paragraphs before he essentially gets slapped and told to stop feeling sorry for himself).

2) The author has a real gift for introducing plot details that take a while to understand (adding flavor to the story along the way) but which are satisfactorily resolved in the end (very few loose ends here). My favorite was the story of the "Witch's Bastard" which we are introduced to halfway in the book. At first, I had no idea what the story was supposed to mean in the context of the plot, but I think by the end, I could make a pretty good guess, and trying to interpret the story really allowed me to see everything that happened in a new light (very cool!).

Please, please get this book. It was absolutely awesome! Best fantasy I've read in the past five years.

A fantastic debut which is very reminiscent of those by Lynch and Rothfuss

NOTE: This is the same book which was earlier being sold for $2.99 however it was sold by the author. Now that it has been picked up by Penguin, they have set the price and its still not that much. This is still a 500-plus page story with a slightly different cover & of course the author mentioned this would be happening nearly 9 days ago on his blog.

ANALYSIS: Blood Song is another of those books that I discovered a few months earlier, thanks to Amazon's cool algorithm for suggesting titles I might like based on my previous "Buying and Search" history. Previously I had stumbled upon Zero Sight by B Justin Shier the same way and the way that book turned out to be, I have learnt to keep an eye out for such Amazon recommendations.

Blood Song begins with a first person narrative featuring Lord Verniers Alishe Someren, a chronicler that has been chosen to write about the main character Vaelin Al-Sorna and about the journey that they both will undertake. The story then begins Vaelin's past as when as a child he's commanded to join the Sixth Order of the Faith of the Unified Realm. Thus begins Vaelin's journey wherein he will learn to wield weapons and become a famed warrior of the unified realm that will also earn him many names all across various nations and regions. Friends and foes alike will be drawn to him in differing amounts. But when all is said and done, Vaelin's journey has only begun as the reader will learn more about his past as well as that of his realm.

One searches for the next best thing in fantasy, often going through many books in search of the book that will enthrall you completely. I almost missed on this beauty by buying it but then never getting around to reading it. I owe thanks to Michael Sullivan for reminding me about this book and what a book it is. Beginning from the events in the past to the current story going on currently, this setup has been explored in various fantasy, historical and other genre novels.

The most recent famous example being The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. In fact a similarity between those two books can be seen in regards to the protagonist's story and their growth via a university/military school setting. What differentiates these two books is a terrific conclusion to the book as well as themes about war and its follies. Also this was my observation but I found some shades of David Gemmell in Anthony Ryan's storytelling style and prose. It is heartening to see a Brit take up the mantle of heroic, epic fantasy from one of fantasy's most distinguished writers as well as a fellow British writer.

This book is more akin to a traditional epic fantasy wherein it's set in a pseudo-European setting and with a world history that is unveiled slowly and tantalizingly. At the same time, there is a core mystery at the heart of this plotline, why was Vaelin sent to the sixth order? What really happened with his parents? Who is the One Who Waits? These questions and much more abound this volume and will tempt readers into coming back for the later parts of this trilogy. The book focuses in the past as well as the present and the author has tantalizingly kept both time periods shrouded in mystery. This thread is what powers the book throughout and makes the story such a strong one.

Characterization is also a strong point in this opening volume, even though we get a singular narrative voice for the majority of the book. The author has created a fascinating side character cast particularly King Janus, Princess Lyrna just to name a few, these characters make the story even more fascinating and with the increase in POV character cast in "Tower Lord" (book II). I can't wait to see which other characters get their own narrative voices. The book ends on a strong note and with a twist that is hard to anticipate, giving the readers a complete story if they want to read just this book however I'm sure once the readers finish this book they will want to read "Tower Lord" the next in the Raven's Shadow trilogy.

Anthony Ryan's Blood Song is a tremendous debut; it has a fast paced, action packed and character driven story. Qualities to admire in any genre story and most of all in an epic fantasy one. Give this book a read, if you have ever felt that Indie books have no quality to them, give this book a read if you are tired of the same morass of stories in the epic fantasy genre, give this book a read if you want a well written story by a newbie author and lastly give this book a read if you want to read a story that's closest to those written by David Gemmell.

Ariel Dorfman is no stranger to exile. Before his 30th birthday, he had fled with his parents (Jews who had escaped from Eastern Europe) from Argentina to the U.S. and then later to Chile. Then, following a military coup, he fled Chile for a stint in Europe before returning to the U.S. For Dorfman, this was not traveling but enduring, as his forced movement between nations, cultures, and languages left him without a place to call home or a culture he could completely define as his own. Although heralded as one of Latin America's leading writers, he once renounced the Spanish language and swore to become an American in both speech and culture. Later, while a student at Berkeley, he abandoned English with the same vengeance and returned to his native Spanish. Such vacillation caused him to ponder the role of language in forming identity, and this theme runs throughout Heading South, Looking North: A Bilingual Journey. The details of this artfully constructed memoir by a Chilean novelist probably best known in this country for his play Death and the Maiden are dramatic, but what makes the book remarkable is its continuing meditation on language and its role in forging identity. When Dorfman was born in Argentina in 1942, his Jewish parents, who had fled Russia, named him Vladimiro in honor of Lenin. In 1945, they moved to New York City, where their son (who adopted the name Edward) refused to speak Spanish and became a believer in popular American culture, even rooting for his father's enemy, Peron, because as long as Juan and Evita remained in power, the Dorfmans would never return to Buenos Aires. In 1955, under pressure from Sen. Joseph McCarthy, Dorfman's father left his job at the U.N. and took his family to Chile, where "Edward" attended an English school. After college, he went north again in 1968 to study at Berkeley and returned to Chile in 1970 to be part of Salvador Allende's socialist government. Three years later, Allende was dead, the country was in the midst of a military putsch and Dorfman was fleeing for his life, back to North America. In alternating chapters, the author relates what happened when Allende was overthrown and the story of his own life and how it was shaped by the language he was speaking. Dorfman at times seems more concerned with writing a "literary" work than with telling a story, but as the book goes on, the self-conscious flourishes diminish and the result is an astonishing portrait of the shaping of a life.

He is a prolific writer of international stature who moves freely among forms producing novels, plays, essays, poems, and, now, an extraordinary memoir of his extraordinary life. His work is structured in chapters that alternate between "the discovery of death" and "the discovery of life and language." The first thread takes place in Chile in the fall of 1973 with the coup against Salvador Allende, when Dorfman says he himself should have died but did not. The second thread follows Dorfman's life chronologically up until that point. Mixed feelings

This is the kind of book I thought I'd enjoy. A memoir by Ariel Dorfman, the novelist, the exile, living now with his family in Durham, North Carolina, where he holds the Walter Hines Page chair at Duke University. To a certain extent I did like it, but the author comes over as a smarmy busy-bee who pokes his nose into everything and inevitably gets himself into trouble. He sounds like a na�ve adolescent, full of himself, pathetic despite his experiences and accomplishments. He is an idealist, a quirky character, a good writer, no doubt an eccentric.
What is most incredible is that the man now lives in the USA despite all his criticism of the country's influence on the Third World in such books as How to Read Donald Duck. A bonus point for the USA for letting him stay, I'd say. This is not to say that Dorfman is incorrect in his assumptions though, rather it begs the question of why did he choose to live in the US? No doubt, it is where he is most likely to draw attention to himself, have his books published, and hold a secure position! In that he's not much different to the rest of us at heart, only differing insofar as his writing and exile is concerned.
Heading South, Looking North is an account of Dorfman's early years in the US, his life in Chile, his involvement during the Allende years, his struggle with language, namely American English and Latin American Spanish, and finally his exile from Chile where this book ends.
The chapters alternate between his early years and the Allende years, before he brings it all together in the closing chapter. The writing is often in the present tense and meanders and grinds on and on, thereby it is easy to lose a grasp of what's being said. Nonetheless, I quite liked the style, though much of the time I couldn't see what the fuss of whether to use Spanish or English was about. Well, so it's difficult to be fluent and think and write in both languages. This is a writer's dilemma, his agony so to speak, but it's no big deal. That is unless you want to make it one, and Dorfman does. Whatever, he seems to succeed in his efforts to write in both languages.
I feel he uses that theme here as an overburdened vehicle to the Allende years and his involvement in the revolution. A guy like this is bound to be involved in some sort of revolution or other. And in this book his supposed squeaky clean honesty reminds me of modern day politicians, who I do not trust. I'd be watching my back if Dorfman was around for sure, he protests too much and I feel there is definitely something he is not saying although he is supposed to be saying it all.
I look forward to reading a novel by him though.

One of greatest literary and political disappointments

Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden helped me learn some new Spanish words, soak in Chile, Chilito, pisco sour... it also helped me imagine with more concreteness the hell that foreign policy and the Pinochet dictatorship unleashed upon Chilean men and women. I learned pieces of the dialogues by heart and wondered about the implications of human frailty and resistance in general. Alas, I took the work to be an expression of criticism toward the weak-willed husband who was content with a foul compromise, with the so-called "dialogue". This memoir as well as Dorfman's pieces in Counterpunch opened my eyes, however. Dorfman has never advanced past the boy who forsook Spanish for English, the boy so awed by glories of Holywood that he'd rather be a whimsical, charming Ariel than a weird Vladimiro. It is hilarious that he is being criticized for Communist sympathies here, when he is a liberal in the nineteenth c. sense of the term who would fight and die for nothing but his piece of the northamerican pie. I wish I had never read any of his work, and I cannot forgive him his cowardice, his duplicity, his heading AND looking north. I'll stick to Galeano instead.

Pivotal moments

This book is the internal memoirs of a man whose defining moments were exile from his homelands and his languages. Exile was a longstanding way of life in Dorfman's family, from his grandparents who had to leave Eastern Europe, to his parents who had to flee both Argentina and the US, and now Dorfman himself, who was forced into asylum after the fall of Allende in Chile. But exile is more of a secondary or co-theme of this book. The other major theme is Dorfman's search for identity through his languages. Throughout the book, Dorfman describes how he came to know language, and the identity traits that go along with a language. He also describes how he came to choose which of his two languages, English and Spanish, to use in different contexts and to consciously construct different identities.
Rather than tell his story chronologically, Dorfman works from a repertoire of pivotal moments. He has asked himself, when and why did I first start using English? When did I begin to write? When did I embrace the philosophy of non-violence? He then describes these episodes in detail, and speculates and philosophizes on them. The story of Dorfman's political activities in Chile and what happened to him during the coup constitute about half of the book, with these political chapters alternating with chapters about the other significant events in his life. The bouncing back-and-forth between time periods moves almost smoothly, like the thought patterns of an insomniac reflecting back at the end of a busy day.
I found many aspects of this book quite interesting. The first-person account of bilingualism, and its ties to a conflicted identity were described very clearly. The inside perspective on the Allende regime and its fall was also informative. What was particularly telling was the speculation on why the regime lost popularity amongst the Chilean people- -how Dorfman himself shamed people who were celebrating the Allende victory with a right-wing singer who was trying to mend fences, and told them the singer was not welcome in the revolution, or how he didn't reach out to a neighbor whose job was jeopardized and then lost because he wasn't an Allendista. Another aspect of this story that I found intriguing was Dorfman's identity as a gringo English speaker brought to Chile against his will as a young teenager, who came to adopt the country and become active in its politics. I couldn't help but think of another young man, Michael Townley, who was also brought by his American family to Santiago in his teenage years, and also learned the language, married a local girl, and wanted to call Chile his permanent home. But Townley was on the other side of the revolution, and became a right-wing terrorist working for the Chilean intelligence forces. Did Dorfman ever encounter Townley? Of course, Dorfman wasn't actually American- -he was an Argentinean who spent a significant portion of his childhood in the US, but he looked and spoke the part. How many other young Americans adopted Chile during this period? What was their combined influence on Chilean politics?

If you are an animator and you don't own this....*sigh* Nevermind.
If you want to be an animator, this is a MUST in your library sitting right next to your copy of the Illusion of Life.

This is CORE reading for aspiring animators and a survival guide for working professionals. For the last 11 years of my career, I have referred to this guide religiously.

A Must-Have. No. Really. I Mean It.

I'm not going to write an in-depth review listing pros and cons. All I will say is if you're an animation student, buy it.
This book goes over the basic tenets of animation, and several things your instructors will drill into your head. My 3d animation teacher tells us three things when we start our projects, and that is "Reference, reference, reference."
This book is worth its weight in gold if you are an animation student. Buy it. You will not regret it.
