Don't waste your time on this sloppy book!

The technical reviewers of this book must've been half-asleep or drinking/smoking something!

I worked my way through the first couple chapters by correcting code typos, omissions and outright bugs that weren't too difficult to fix, but Chapter 3 - Custom URL Rules was a different matter completely.

The author's code shown in the book did not work, so I checked it against his /config/web.php code example in the download files and they aren't even close! For one thing the download code uses folder names that aren't even discussed in the book. But even if you use the download code, you get nothing but errors. The error messages reference classes deep into the framework, which are beyond a Yii2 novice's ability to debug in a reasonable length of time - even a "novice" like myself with 20 years of PHP experience.

It takes enough effort to learn a new language/framework from a book that is well-written. Don't waste your time on this sloppy book.

Really useful for Yii2 beginners and intermediates alike.

I was one of the technical reviewers on this book, and have thus read the book thoroughly from start to end.

The book requires a working knowledge of PHP and associated technologies, but as long as you have that, you are bound to find the book useful. Whether you're just starting out with Yii2 or you've been playing around with it a bit, Yii2 By Example contains a lot of useful information.

While a user with some experience in Yii2 development may not benefit a lot from the first few sections, in which everything is set up and explained, the book quickly becomes useful as it dives deeper, while still explaining things in an easy-to-understand manner.

Of particular interest to those who are interested in developing more advanced Yii2 applications are the chapters that pertains to the advanced application template, such as the separation of frontend and backend with a common layer for models and configs, the development of a REST API, and of course creation of console commands that can be used in cronjobs or for maintenance tasks.

One of the things I love about the 'By Example' series of books from Packt Publishing, is the way a lot of subjects are covered from multiple angles when possible. A good example of this, in Yii2 By Example, would be the access control sections, where multiple methods are shown and explained.

Racy espionage thriller

"Greenmantle", by John Buchan, is actually based on a remarkable, if little-known, aspect of German propaganda during World War I. It involved Kaiser Wilhelm declaring himself a convert to Islam, a leader of "jihad", as a tactic for winning the support of the Muslim territories under British control and thus fomenting an anti-British revolution. Richard Hannay, Buchan's intrepid hero from "The Thirty-Nine Steps", is the man entrusted to stop this plan from being carried out, and his adventure takes him from London, to Holland and Turkey and finally to the Russian border for a spectacular climax. Complaints have been made about Buchan's racist and jingo-imperialist biases, as the novel easily betrays the sentiments of a la "dominion over palm and pine." However, a fiction-writer may, under a certain poetic license, attack creeds, doctrines, persons and institutions with impunity; moreover, a writer must be seen as a product of his age. This racy, lively, energetic novel is best appreciated as an excellent work of light literature. The conclusion is an undeniably exciting confrontation, including the charge of Cossack cavalry, as Hannay engages in the final showdown between the two German villains, the gross Stumm and the evil beauty, Hilda von Einem.

A fine little thriller

...and a harmless read (recommended for train trips through particularly tedious or repetitive countryside, or long plane flights spent wedged into economy class). "Greenmantle" is another of Buchan's Richard Hannay novels (the same protagonist as in "The Thirty-Nine Steps"); in it Hannay must track and foil a plot by the Kaiser to foment Jihad. I confess to being particularly drawn to this book as, well, an example of WWI-era pulp. It is sufficiently plot-driven, and entertaining enough to while happily away a few hours. Decidedly fun.

A great little spy novel

This story is a strange one if you do not understand the world as it was during the confusing times of World War One. However, if you are reading this book simply for enjoyment, you picked a good one. It is a little rascist, but if only you consider the time it was written and the beliefs then, I don't think you can consider it a bad book. It is not proper to judge a book written in the early twentieth century by our current standards of political correctness. It is simply a good indicator of past views of various people. If you don't mind the little rascism this book has and remember that it was written when that was perfectly normal, you should enjoy it immensely.

Ted is a speaker with the Smalley Relationship Center and coauthor of "The Language of Sex" and "From Anger to Intimacy". He is a graduate of Liberty University and Dallas Theological Seminary. Great devotion for getting discussion going

Real cracking stuff

Foote, alias Jim, former Soviet spy narrates his experiences working for Red Army Intelligence. Firstly, he says how he came to be recruited into the network.This was effected by a woman known by her cover name ` Sonia". Foote succumbed to the charms of Communism at an young age and volunteered to serve in the International Brigade fighting in Spain fighting to save the Republican government from Franco's fascist forces.

Book is filled with several interesting anecdotes of which a few are striking. As international crisis sharpened Centre in Moscow could not bring agents for training. So Foote says he had to learn all the necessary skills to perform his role as a spy of his own account . So he self taught radio telegraphy, microphotography, secret inks, sabotage. Foote managed to bluff Swiss authorities into staying in an apartment where he rigged an aerial for his transmitter for communication with Moscow. Both practices were forbidden for foreigners seeking asylum in Switzerland.

Author had a tough time establishing contact with Centre; host of technical details to be taken care of. Foote has explained the difficulties he experienced while doing so. It represented a challenge to a novice . Communication forms an important component of spy network and also its Achilles heel. If you are unable to pass on to the appropriate authority information gathered the work done by the agents is made futile. Frequencies, call signs used for communication are frequently changed as a safety precaution to beat enemy's radio monitoring squads. Most important source of information was man called Lucy. Not his real name , his identity remained secret for a long time and was established long after the war came to an end. Details on Lucy supplied by author are incomplete, inaccurate. New research has uncovered a lot on this mysterious character. Former was getting reliable, accurate, detailed information from Werther who worked in the German High Command. This he passed on through cut outs, resident director Rado to the author for transmission to Moscow.

Initially , Centre was skeptical about information received considering Lucy as a conduit for feeding for disinformation; too good to be true. Author argues only exigencies of war forced Centre accepting the information at face value, an unorthodox practice going by Soviet espionage standards. Under normal circumstances information is accepted only after thoroughly vetting the source.

What has intrigued me is Lucy's principle source of information `Werther'. But who was Werther? Does it refer to a single man or body which worked against interests of Nazi regime? Author has not been able solve the mystery surrounding Werther. Post war CIA study has done it partially. It represented group of top ranking officers of German High Command who loathed Nazi regime and some of whom were involved in a abortive plot to assassinate Fuehrer. Another point to note speed with which information was reaching Moscow made Soviets to distrust this source. According to author operational decisions were known 24 hrs of it being taken at appropriate HQ's in Berlin. Author has argued this intelligence bonanza helped Soviet regime to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

It was interesting to read how the Swiss discovered the activities of Soviet spy ring. Author is amazed even after its discovery Swiss authorities refused to take action even though latter's actions flouted Swiss neutrality laws. Today we why was this so. Switzerland was also a beneficiary to intelligence passed on by Lucy. Finally it was pressure from Gestapo which forced former to take action.

Before the war came to close Foote came to Moscow to meet his Soviet masters. Author had a tough time in disabusing latter's notion that he was British double agent. The ordeal , author has recalled, left him dry and exhausted. For the first time readers are given a glimpse of life inside iron curtain.He also has harsh words for Centre whose actions he condemns as cynical. Agents are used and then discarded without any consideration. So he decided to quit, for he by this time was utterly disillusioned by Communism. Soviet actions author found to his dismay were no different from those of other Capitalist powers.

I'm glad that author chose to share information with posterity on his life as a Soviet spy. The book contains no source material. Author wrote it down when his memory of what he did remained clear and fresh. Many authors have drawn information from this work to write their epic histories of Soviet secret services. Text is very colorful littered with French and Latin words that often I had to use online resources available to check its meaning. This book is best read in unison V.E Tarrant `s work Red Orchestra.

It truly is a handbook for spies

I read recently where someone in the secret service - or somewhere like that, I believe, said all you have to do is to read Handbook for Spies to learn everything you need to know about how to be a spy. As it was written in 1949 I was a bit skeptical. So I decided to read it - not that I intend to become a spy. Not only was it written in 1949 but it takes place during WW II - and even before. While some of the technology is obviously dated, its basic organizational principles ring true and would seem to me to be relevant even today. Well written and organized - although I got a bit lost sometimes with all of the names. And it's all (mostly) true!

In Who Wants to Marry a Cowboy by Abigail Sharpe, Ainsley Fairfax is tired of being the "good daughter" and letting her mother walk all over her, telling her how to live her life. The only thing she's been able to accomplish herself is to open Charleston Blooms, a flower shop she owns and operates in South Carolina. But her mother is holding even that over her head trying to get her to agree to marry society member Edward. When her mother books a romantic cruise for Ainsley and Edward, she finally decides she has had enough. Her sister Cecelia has been in love with him for years, much to Ainsley's surprise and delight, so they decide to take each others place on their respective vacations: Cecelia sneaks onto the cruise to try and convince Edward to listen to his feelings and choose her, not the life plan his family has laid out for him, and Ainsley goes to a ranch in Wyoming to be part of a singles retreat.

"It was the first time he wore a natural smile and the effect devastated her willpower. It transformed the stress on his face, making him boyish and charming, and sent darts of heat down to her toes."

Ainsley is hoping to stay out of the spotlight and use the time away from her problems to relax and enjoy the greenhouse and surrounding land. She is not impressed when she first runs into ranch owner and bachelor Riley Pommer. He's just a good looking in person as the photos suggested, but his attitude leaves a lot to be desired. He obviously isn't happy with his sister's plans to use him as market research to see if their ranch can be successfully used as a singles retreat. Ainsley feels a tug of desire and awareness every time they are near each other so she tries to avoid him at all cost and let the other wannabe wives flirt and monopolize his time. The catiness escalates in the group when it becomes apparent that Riley feels a connection with her as well. She tries to stay honest to herself and with Riley, but will he choose to listen to the gossip...or to his own heart?

"He leaned forward, the solid planes of his body only a couple of inches from hers, close enough that she could taste the outdoors on his clothes, his mouth inches from her ear."

Riley Pommer is living on his family's ranch again after his father passed away a few months ago. In the midst of keeping an eye on his siblings and trying to take care of running the ranch, his sisters have concocted a plan to make some money to keep them afloat. They hope to turn the ranch into a singles retreat, somewhat along the lines of the reality show the Bachelor. And they are using Riley as their first test subject. They have several eligible young woman arriving to take place in the research and they hope maybe he will fall in love in the process. Riley, however, wants nothing to do with their scheme. He is plenty capable of finding his own woman, when and if he wants a relationship. He's too busy with the ranch to take time off for the nonsense.

That is until he sets eyes on sassy Ainsley. She's beautiful and has an attitude that would certainly keep him on his toes. Too bad he's not looking for a long-term relationship. In his experience, those only end in trouble and heartache. As he spends time with each of the women, he's surprised at their attempts to manipulate him. He doesn't know who to trust and can't believe anything any of them say. Except for Ainsley. He's pretty sure he can tell when she looks at him that she's telling the truth. But as the gossip becomes more and more out of control, he has to step back and figure out who's being truthful. Only it may be too late to take action once he sorts out the facts from the lies.

Abigail Sharpe has written a romantic, charming and unique story. The idea of a couples retreat has definitely been done, but creating a singles getaway along the lines of the Bachelor/Bachelorette leads to some interesting situations. Catty attitudes and backstabbing ensues along with some very comical interactions between Riley and the wannabe wives. I loved the amount of details Abigail used to describe the land around the ranch, and especially when she described the characters feelings and emotions. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy romance with some heat, humor and heart.

Not a bad read for a non-romance reader

First off, let me say that I don't really read romance books that often. The few I've read have been ones that have been given to me or were the only things I had around to read. So while it's not the genre I prefer, I get it.

There are the stereotypical archetypes of the wild woman who needs to be tamed or the broken woman who needs to be built up that I've seen in a couple of the other books I've read - but Ainsley did not quite typify that and it was nice. She was a bit uptight at times and she had a bit of a temper (though not unjustly so), but her biggest problem was her overbearing mother and who doesn't have that problem? I'm 32, and while my mother doesn't have nearly the means to do so, if she did, I have to wonder if she wouldn't be as bad as Sophia in this book - who goes to great lengths to get Ainsley to marry Edward.

Ah, Edward. My least favorite character in this book. I just could never wrap my head around his decisions and his motivations! God! Could anyone really be that stupid and concerned about social standing and propriety?! If this were Pride and Prejudice I could see it, but in modern times? And even when he finally gets what he truly wants he's an idiot! I was just shaking my head at his every decision.

Riley was a good character, but I found myself questioning his decisions. What I mean is, he had a good backstory for not trusting women - and it came out when he was with Ainsley. However when it came to the lies that the other women told him, he bought those hook, line, and sinker! It just seemed a bit incongruous to me.

My favorite part of this book? CONDOMS! Lol. No, really - every time there was mention of (SPOILERS) Ainsley and Riley actually having sex - using a condom was mentioned. Hallelujah!

I did actually enjoy this book. I even cried at the end. The scene where Seth breaks down at the end was really touching and well it just kept me going til the end. Maybe I'm more of a softy and a romantic than I'm willing to admit.

Not a typical romance... and that's a good thing!

I love this book! It's a terrific take on the cowboy-romance genre, with characters you care about (and some you want to kick square in the hoo-hoo), dialogue that's believable, and settings you can visualize and wish you could visit. The main characters are flawed and struggling, but their bone-deep goodness makes you root for them, even on those rare occasions when they seem to change their minds with what seems (to the reader) like insufficient provocation.

The writing is strong, one of my favorite things about the book, in fact. It doesn't talk down to the reader, and it also doesn't strive to be lofty and literary. It's rhythms are so natural to me that I zipped right through the book.

There are a few typos or typesetting errors throughout the text (fewer than 10 in the whole thing, I'd estimate). They don't disrupt the flow of the story or confuse the reader, but some people are especially sensitive to them and might find them annoying, as anything that catches the reader's eye can yank them out of the story and into the "I'm reading a book about fictional things" place that is not ideal for reveling in a story.

For those of us who have read so many stereotypical romances in our lifetimes that we could predict the events in those books with eerie accuracy, this book is a breath of fresh air. I mean, yes, there's the happy ending we expect from genre romances, but the execution of it, with its parallel love stories and its unusual gimmick (the beta-testing a lovers'/dating dude ranch), takes to a new level of fun.

Oh, and the hot sex scenes rock, too. (You know, if you're into that kind of thing.)

Extremely accessible treatment of Long-range dependence

The author has prepared an extremely accessible treatment for the time series analysis of long-range dependent processes. The book can serve as a wonderful introduction to the topic for novices, as well as a valuable desktop reference for practitioners.

The author does a very good job of keeping the prerequisites from mathematics and statistics to the bare minimum. On the mathematics side, you'll need to solid understanding of undergraduate calculus, including infinite series and sequences. I recommend Apostle's two volume set Calculus, Vol. 1 and Calculus, Vol. 2 . Elementary probability and statistics are required, and Rao s Linear Statistical Inference and Its Application is a nice introduction. Finally, you'll need some exposure to the ARIMA analysis of time series. Try Brockwell & Davis Introduction to Time Series and Forecasting.

In the first chapter, Beran provides a wonderfully intuitive introduction in which he asks the reader to consider what happens to time-honored statistical techniques for estimating mean & variance by sample mean and sample variance in the case the usually IID (independent, identically distributed) assumption is no longer valid. This leads quite naturally into a discussion of the autocorrelation function for stationary processes, which is at the core of the investigation. The chapter concludes with a number of real-world examples of long-range dependent time series. Note that the author uses the term "long-memory" to be synonymous with long-range dependence. This is not necessarily a widely adopted practice, so take care when reading other authors. The Nile river data set is introduced at the end of the chapter, and this data will be referenced repeatedly throughout the remainder of the book.

Chapter 2 introduces the formal definition of long-range dependence in terms of the rate of decay of the autocorrelation function of a stationary time series (or equivalently via asymptotic properties of the spectral density function). Next, self-similar processes are introduced, with the most well-known of these being fractional Brownian motion. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the fractional ARIMA model, which is emphasized in the remainder of the text.

Chapter 3 is a short chapter which records the limit theorems needed for the asymptotic distribution of maximum likelihood estimators found later in the text. The results are stated and motivated, and the author provides copious literature references if the reader is interested in tracking down the mathematical proofs of these results.

Chapter 4 begins study of statistical inference for long-range dependent processes, and this starts with the Hurst R/S statistic. This discussion is reinforced with the use of the Nile river data, together with chart plots for a number of sample statistics.

Maximum likelihood estimation of the Hurst parameter H in fractional ARIMA models begins in Chapter 5 with a focus on time-domain techniques, although analysis of spectral density plays an important role. The exact Gaussian MLE and Whittle's approximate MLE are introduced and asymptotic normality of the estimators is established via use of the limit theorems of Chapter 3.

The emphasis shifts to spectral density and frequency domain in chapter 6 by considering techniques based on periodogram analysis. The fractional EXP model is introduced and considered as an alternative to the fARIMA model studied so far.

Up to this point, the main object of study has been stationary Gaussian processes. Chapter 7 provides a glimpse of some techniques used to non-stationary processes, or non-Gaussian stationary processes. This is an active area of research and the treatment here is provided to give the reader an appreciation of these issues, rather than a comprehensive review of the state-the-art.

Chapter 8 is principally concerned with estimating the mean and standard deviation for non-centered processes, as well the problem of predicting future mean values.

The question of performing linear regression on dependent variable with long-range dependent explanatory variables and long-range dependent innovations is discussed in Chapter 9. This is a must read chapter for econometricians and anyone working with economic time series data.

The next two chapters are brief, and touch on topics such as goodness-of-fit tests, simulation and fractional GARMA processes. In the final chapter, the author includes SPLUS programs along with data sets (including the Nile River data).

"The reference" on long-range dependence

Not recommended for those who don't have a mathematical background (graduate) or don't want to spend too much time on the formal aspects of self-similar and related processes.
Maybe some of the chapters require a deep understanding of a particular application field where long-memory does appear but there are enough exmples so that reading it a second time enables to develop a strong intuition of what memory is when applied to time series.
