About the Author
Maria T. Codina Leik, MSN, APRN, BC, FNP-C is the President and Principal Lecturer at National ARNP Services, Inc., her own company. Well-known for her ability to simplify complex concepts for her students, she is a popular speaker and educator. Ms. Leik taught previously in the NP program at Florida International University Graduate School of Nursing. She is Board Certified in two specialties: Family NP and Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP by the AANP and ANCC. Her research findings have been presented at an international HIV conference as well as at nursing conferences. In addition to her two NP certification review books published by Springer Publishing, she is the author of book chapters in two NP textbooks. Ms. Leik is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.

ANCC FNP

I wanted to write a review that would help NP students/graduates that are in the position that I was a few months ago.

1. AANP vs. ANCC? I put a lot of thought into which board exam I wanted to take and why. I ended up choosing ANCC-FNP for the main reason that I feel nursing, in general, encompasses many different areas other than just medicine, including ethics, legal, culture, theories, etc. To me, the AANP exam seemed kind of geared towards the PA & medicine realm. During my conference, a lot of people were turned off by the new questions that were appearing on the 2014 ANCC exam. By this I am talking about the questions that have 3 correct answers, pictures, and matching. There were many of these on the exam, but don't be overly concerned about this, it all works out in the end.

2. How long do you prepare for the exam? There is no right or wrong answer to this. On average, I felt that my colleagues studied for ~8 weeks. I, personally, studied for 4 months only because of the fact that I was going through many life changes during my study period (e.g., selling my house, moving out of state, working FT, looking for a new jobs, etc.). I tried to study 2 hours/day, with 1 study-free day. I do have to say that I felt overly prepared during the exam and that 85% of what I studied was not even on the exam!!

3. LEIK: I have to say that this was the BEST, most HELPFUL book that I purchased for my studies. I referred to it as my study 'bible.' I read through the whole book, front to back, highlighting things that were important. Things that I loved about this book: it goes through a lot of "REAL LIFE" information during the first chapter. It gives you MANY inside TIPS throughout the book. It is very easy to read. I found the pharmacology section helpful. Although, not very extensive, this book had the best professional issues review. Lastly, I found the questions in the back (1,284 total-I did them all!) to be very fair and helpful.

4. A CONFERENCE: I highly recommend attending the Fitzgerald conference LIVE. It was extremely helpful, never a dull moment. It was a 3-day conference. Well worth the $$. It comes with a review manual which is also a must-have!

5. BARKLEY AUDIO CDS: Audio CDs were a must for me b/c I commute 2-3hrs/day. The Barkley CDs were really good and kept my interest throughout.

6. HOLLIER: I recommend this as a book for solely practice questions. The questions are not overly hard and a good starting point. The book is laid out so that you can do 5 ?s, look at the answers, and so on. I rented to 2009 version from my library. Renting front a library is a great idea, but you can't write in them of course!

7. FamlyNPrep.com: I bought 10 practice exams from here. I ended up not being able to take all 10. I would recommend buying 5, but unfortunately they only come in packages of 1, 10, 20. While the questions were just ok from here, I liked being able to (a) do practice tests on the computer (b) practice doing 200 ?s straight through and (c) get scores that were similar to the real test.

8. FITZGERALD book: I also bought the Fitzgerald book and would not recommend reading this book front to back, like LEIK. The questions, while some information was duplicate from the conference, were fairly helpful.

9. BROWN: This is a book completely practice questions. There were overly challenging and towards the end of my studying I was only getting 50-60% correct, which starting to make me concerned. I realized that I was not the only one who thought this. There are many questions about surgeries which aren't covered anywhere else, and quite frankly are not applicable! I didn't get a chance to use the CD that it comes with.

10. FNP Secrets Study Guide: Don't waste your money. While it did have a decent sized section on non-clinical issues, I did not find it overall to be very helpful.

As you can see, I utilized many different resources to study for this 'dreaded' test. Failing was not an option to me. To summarize, the recourses that helped me the most were: LEIK, Fitz conference, Barkley audio cds (if you are auditory learner), Hollier, and FamilyNPrep.com. If you are taking the ANCC, think culture, culture, culture!

Just passed my ANCC for FNP

I just passed my ANCC today and here are some books I wish I had in school. The following helped me to pass the ANCC because they are most like the test. First, Margaret Fitzgerald's book Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination and Practice Preparation is a great must have book for school and test prep. If you can, take her live seminar or get the CDs. Next Leik's book Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Intensive Review:Fast Facts and Practice Questions, great book, good to synthesize all of the Fitzgerald info. The Hollier/Wirfs book: Certification Prep Exams Practice Test s and Questions with Rationales 4th ed is a great prep for questions, don't bother buying the review book by Hollier, it is too basic. Next, make SURE you buy the Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Review by Zerwekh and Claborn. This is the only review book I could find that has a CD rom . The CD is almost like the actual test and some of the questions are very similar. If you start off by buying these four books you will be in good shape. Good luck on the exam!

I used the Fitzgerald as my go to review...took the ANCC FNP exam and failed. As someone who has seen the material on the actual exam, this book does a far superior job of providing extensive review material for all that is covered in the new exam that was released in early August 2013. A must buy for those attempting either AANP or ANCC exam.

Fantastic action filled read!!

AJ Adams can write! I have absolutely loved all of her books. Unlike the previous books, the H is actually not a criminal! I usually lean toward outlaws but Mac is a fantastic character. Watching Pepper's transformation is riveting. The plot is complex, engaging, and probably more realistic than we would like to think. Adams has amazing insight into people and the dialogue feels so real. My husband does not enjoy romance like I do but this plot is so interesting that I recommended the book to him. Lots of action I know he would like with the HEA I require. You do not want to pass up this fantastic read!

Unlikely allies in life and love…

On the surface, Mac and Pepper should have been running screaming from each other. Instead, an unusual partnership began due to expedience that turned into more than salvation for both of them.

Human sex slavery. It sends chills down my spine and reading details about it here that could be ripped from the headlines brings to home how evil it is. Pepper got caught up in it at an early age so when she comes into Mac’s ‘possession’ years later, the deep damage had been done. Mac is not quite what you would call a ‘white knight’ as he continues to skirt the edges of the law. Mercenary or freedom-fighter, the lines are blurred to the point that Mac may not know on one day to the next where he stands. Those lines become a lot clearer, and straighter, as the two’s partnership begins…

“Mine. Just thinking that gave me a curious feeling. Protective and possessive.”

This story was an incredible combination of romance, recovery, action, adventure and redemption. The first chapters were incredibly dark as they gave details on how Mac and Pepper both came to be in this place in time. What I didn’t expect as the complicated plot played out was the humour and playfulness that would unexpectedly pop up allowing this very dark story to include a sense of hope.

“If the dam fool had one the job right, he’d have just shot us. It was our good luck that he went totally storybook villain.”

Mac is like a dark ‘James Bond’ crossed with a very sarcastic Indiana Jones. There is humanness to him that is evident in the decisions he makes in the most harrowing circumstances. The transformation of Pepper from a beaten down shell to a strong, vibrant woman was an incredible feat of strength and courage. I wanted to cheer and cheer some more!

“My Pepper was reborn, and she wasn’t apologizing. My girl was her own person. The knowledge put a song in my heart.”

Honest Review

Wow! AJ has done it again. This is her fourth book, and all of them seem to follow this basic theme: a young woman finds herself in deep deep trouble, and a strong alpha male comes along at just the right time to save her from whatever mess she's gotten herself into.

The thing that makes her books different, is that the men in these books are never knights in shining armor. In fact, they can be quite evil men, drug cartel leaders, enforcers, etc. And the women are usually not angels either. But they all do have an internal code of honor, a code that guides them, and that they'd never break.

Deliverance does not stray too far from this theme, but it does in a few key areas. For one, Mac does not work for the drug cartels, and he is basically a good guy, although he's not afraid to do what's necessary to secure his mission. He's a British ex-military man, going undercover to root out terrorists in the Middle East. And Pepper is basically a complete and total victim, at least at the beginning. She has been kept as a sex slave ever since she was a child, she hardly knows anything else.

The relationship that builds between these two is wonderful to behold. I love the patience and kindness Mac has with Pepper. At first Pepper is confused by this, as all she's ever known from men is pain and suffering. She hardly knows how to handle his kindness to her, thinking another shoe is sure to drop at any moment.

But slowly, he earns her trust, and slowly she begins to realize he's different from other men. They grow stronger together. And when Mac goes off to the Middle East, Pepper goes with him.

The book is more than a romance between them, although it is certainly that, but it's also an exciting novel about military men, terrorist scum, and Middle East politics. It's explosive. It's sexy. It's exciting. What more could you ever want in a book? It's also a standalone novel, so no sequel to wait for.

Pretty much everything but the contents of that little black book makes an appearance in this painfully personal memoir-cum-photo-album from Hollywood Madame Fleiss. Court records, wiretap transcripts, facsimiles of seemingly any article that mentions her and incident reports from her two-year prison stint: by rifling through her past as one of America's oddball pseudo-celebrities, Fleiss attempts, as she asserts in a brief introduction, to create a book about "memory, style, culture, and politics, as much as anything else." The copious news clippings are intended to "provide the context, so that the truth of those times can live on," and there's a revealing fascination on Fleiss's part with the endless coverage about her. But the most intriguing documents are the ones that weren't public until this book's release-images and descriptions of Fleiss's fellow inmates, the tug of war Fleiss enacted with prison officials in order to be transferred to a federal boot camp program so she could get out of prison more quickly, the overcrowded halfway house she entered after prison. Fleiss also includes plenty of unrevealing musings ("they say there is nothing like a woman scorned...well nothing compares to the ego of a man"), justifications and recriminations (one section of the book is titled "Jealous and Angry Hookers") in a hodgepodge of commentary that's complemented by the book's cluttered design. With its promise of tell-all titillation, curious celeb-hounds won't be deterred by this media scrapbook's shortcomings.

Misleading

I like Heidi Fleiss and think she's very intelligent, but this book was such a disappointment for me. First off, it looks like a photo album, and has pictures and newspaper clippings of all her stuff, and every couple of pages their is some of her writing, but not much. It's more about a book of pictures with summaries. No thanks, I have my own photo albums to look thru.

Real-Life Look Inside

Many details are told and supported by Fleiss' story, court transcripts and various interviews. This world of wealth, drug use, celebrities, powerful people, LAPD, lies, conniving, deception, world travel and kinky sex, is a real-life look into the debaucherous world of Hollywood that piques the interest.
The constant bickering among Madame Alex (died in '95), Ivan Nagy, and Heidi open the doors to this world of raggedy, back-stabbing, shallow people who have the propensity to lie about what they eat for dinner. But then again, this is L.A.
This book is interesting and describes the workings and personalities of this world. She did make it in her heyday. From her good family and upbringing in Los Feliz which is in the Hollywood/LA scene to her 1.5 million dollar home she purchased from Michael Douglas in Beverly Hills. She did it. Should means justify ends?
What brought her down was her flamboyance, flaunting, and high profile. She talked too much, and in this industry one must be discreet. The police don't care about Madames who "pander," as long as they keep quiet, and provide information as informants. Heidi wasn't quiet, and her info. to the police was often incorrect and/or useless.
Now that she has fallen, she can try to sell the experience of this past, because the present for her (like her past) only has old-bags of wind with deep pockets who'll be her meal-ticket. And today (2003)she's out of her prime even for them. As Madame Alex said, "she wasn't even a 4.5 on a scale of 10," and she sure hasn't improved today. Mentally, she's still a 16 yr. old who's still selling her a** because that's all she's got--besides this book. Kudos to Heidi for putting it out.

An excellent guide to the roller coaster that is the oil market

This is an excellent overview of the oil market cycles. McNally goes through significant history and technical details about the petroleum industry while retaining what I would consider a journalistic style. He also is even handed when addressing various controversial theories such as 'peak oil', or the role of OPEC and the US shale industry in the most recent glut. In addition, his smooth and accessible writing style makes for an enjoyable read. He has studied the topic deeply. I was pleased to read his logical analysis of supply and demand, and how the lags in increasing and decreasing production inside the oil industry lead to the inevitable booms and busts that we have seen. The book was written with care, and the graphs and charts inside support the findings well. I recommend this book highly if you would like to understand what has happened in the oil market, why, and what it means for the market in the years to come.

Splendid and readable insight into a crucial market.

A much-needed account of the history of oil price volatility. Anybody assuming that the oil market is driven by Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand" is in for a rude awakening. Throughout its history, the oil market has been manipulated. The author makes a good case that such manipulation - resulting in relative price stability - is generally (although not always) a public welfare. The rise and fall of the various manipulating/stabilising protagonists over time is clearly delineated,as is the prospect for significantly reduced price stability in the period ahead. I had always assumed that shale oil would be a natural swing supply, but the author debunks that clinically. If I had to pick a complaint it is that the perspective is too much from the US point of view. The various forces in action in the other producer countries, especially Saudi Arabia, is skipped over a little bit. One big question in my mind is why, in a era of very low oil prices, would Saudi Arabia continue to produce at such high volume? The "bust" period is likely to be followed by "boom" and if the Saudis need immediate cash for their public expenditure, they can issue Shariah-compliant instruments, secured on the oil in the ground, on very favourable terms. But I have no hesitation in giving this 5 stars. It contains valuable insight in a very readable form.

Best Wodehouse Book I've read yet!

Like many, I discovered P.G. Wodehouse later in life, and so glad I did. One of the most brilliant humorists of any generation. It's not so much the plot (they're all pretty similar - Bertie in the Jeeves' series or Psmith or the Blanding's Castle cast or his other characters always get into some predicament involving eccentric relatives, on-again, off-again marriage plans, or some other harmless chicanery), but those of us who are devotees never tire of the brilliant repartee, characters, and humorous portrayal of the British landed gentry of the early 20th century. All of the books are enjoyable, some more than others, but I have to say without a doubt that "The Code of the Woosters" is definitely the most laugh-out-loud brilliant humor/writing/reading experience I've had to-date from Wodehouse. Absolutely pitch-perfect. Jeeves is at his finest, Bertie is either oblivious or in deep waters - often both at the same time. The range of characters is spot on - just the right touch throughout. I strongly recommend this book, and guarantee Wodehouse devotees you won't be disappointed!

A truly enchanting escape into a colorful and peculiar social universe of the iconic British leisure class. As a young man living in a world where it seems every social interaction is marked with the interruption of cell phones or television, I thoroughly enjoyed following the silly social predicaments of Bertie and Jeeves. The Color Yellow, the color of Madness

Sheramy Bundrick's first novel based on art history is a gem of a book. "Sunflowers" is the story of Vincent Van Gogh's last 2 years of life as seen through the eyes of his Arlesienne prostitute lover, Rachel Courtreau.

Ms. Bundrick, an art historian at a Florida University, has taken the facts of Van Gogh's tortured life and woven them with beautiful descriptions of the time, place and people he painted. As if this information wasn't enough to base her novel on, Ms. Bundrick takes us inside the artist's head through his "imagined but possible" conversations with M. Roulin, Dr's Rey and Peyron, M. Trabuc, and others who featured in Van Gogh's brightly colored canvases. What caused Van Gogh's madness??? Was he bi-polar? Did he suffer from epilepsy? Did he feel the constant pressure to paint and be understood like all artists do?One can only imagine....

Rachel's part as Van Gogh's love interest, serves a dual purpose of "setting the scene". Through her story, we see the beautiful colors of the South of France, the artist's process, the weather, the festivals, the town of Arles as Van Gogh would have seen it, and what a woman's life was like if and when fate intervened.

A great way to enjoy this book even further would be to have an art book on hand that features Van Gogh's paintings.

Sappy love story, sheds light on madness and creativity

I picked up this book because I enjoy historical fiction, the lives of creative geniuses, and severe mental illness. I think the author brought light to the topic of madness and creativity, how the two went hand-in-hand for Van Gogh, and illustrating the devastating effect the episodes ("crise") must have had on his personal relationships and his art. The author also does a very nice job of describing the places, sights, smells, sounds, and colors of the world of Vincent Van Gogh in the last two years of his life.

Unfortunately the love story for me was just a bit too sappy, but then I'm not a big romance reader. The love story didn't seem very sophisticated. I also found some of the characters a bit unbelievable--especially Dr. Rey, who is supposed to be very nice and normal, but his reaction to Rachel seems extremely naive considering that he is supposed to be a full-grown man who had gone through college and medical school. I did appreciate that even though the heroine was a prostitute there were no detailed graphic descriptions of sex, which I think would have detracted from the beauty of the book.

Overall, I found the sappiness of the love story distracting, but the author's loving description of the art and the way she makes the places and times come alive made the book enjoyable.

A nice first outing for a new author

First time author and art historian Sheramy Bundrick takes a character who is a mere footnote in history - a prostitute by the name of Rachel was presented with Vincent Van Gogh's severed ear by the artist himself - and spins an artful (pun intended) tale around what-might-have-been. Told from the first person POV, Rachel awakes from a nap in a city garden to find a odd gentleman sketching her - and a new friendship begins that quickly turns to love - although Rachel's love is strongly tested when Vincent begins displaying bouts of madness and he is hospitalized and eventually taken away from Arles and Rachel. Can their love survive? Can Vincent overcome his madness and marry her? If you don't want to know the answers before reading the book stay off the internet.

Outside of a few minor quibbles, I found this was a very entertaining, albeit a quick and light read (heh, after Wolf Hall anything would be light and easy). I'm not terribly fond of the first person narrative, although it did work well here, especially seeing Rachel's reactions to Vincent's madness as well as to his paintings (nicely done), but it did box the author in when she had to use *letters* between Rachel and Vincent later in the book. There was more black and white in some characters than I care to see (argh! the prostitutes with the heart of gold), and perhaps some of the language (especially the cursing) was a bit too modern. Although I haven't a clue how any Frenchman (in this century or the last) swears so what do I know? Rachel seemed to have a touch too much freedom, both coming and going from the brothel as well as when Vincent was in the asylum - but those are all minor nits on an otherwise engaging tale.

A big thumbs up on the author's notes telling us what is known and what was not as well as when she *fudged* a date or two to make her story work. I like to see that - now if Ms. "historical entertainment" could learn to do that. This is a solid first entry into the historical fiction field and I look forward to who or what she'll write about next - love the art angle and want to see more.

Max Scheler (1874-1928) was a professor of philosophy and sociology at the University of Cologne and was best known for his work in phenomenology, ethics, and philosophical anthropology.
